Stranger Things Season 5 May Not Beat Season 4 While Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials Debuts Well

20 January 20269 Mins Read

It’s time for another weekly rundown of the Netflix top 10s! Below, we’ll be taking you through the biggest stories from the past week, including debuts and updates to multiple shows. This week, we’ll cover Seven Dials, Stranger Things 5, The Great Flood, Emily in Paris, HIS & HERS, Can This Love Be Translated?, People We Meet on Vacation and more!

A busy day for nerd stats on Netflix, given that, alongside Netflix’s Q4 earnings, they also released the sixth biannual Netflix Engagement Report. We’ll have more analysis to come on that, but if you don’t fancy diving into the Excel spreadsheet Netflix puts the data in, we’ve updated our big Engagement Report search tool, which features the ability to search each of the individual reports in addition to combined reports with breakouts for views and viewing hours. It’s also now got a unified search and the ability to share! Have a play and let us know what you think.

We’ve already done some analysis on The Rip, which debuted at #1 on the English movie charts with 41.6M views, which puts it in the upper tier of movie launches for the past few years. It’s not quite guaranteed a spot on Netflix’s all-time list, given that there are 80-something days still to go before the final 91-day count, but it’s off to a good start.

Let’s begin with this week’s weekly ranks, which date back to mid-2023:

  • English TV: 67,400,000 (Rank 14 of 135 weeks)
  • English Film: 99,000,000 (Rank 16 of 135 weeks)
  • Non-English TV: 25,100,000 (Rank 88 of 135 weeks)
  • Non-English Film: 14,800,000 (Rank 130 of 135 weeks)

1. Will Stranger Things 5 topple season 4? It’s a nailbiter…

Stranger Things is still dominating the top 10s with all prior seasons STILL in the weekly top 10s despite the finale having aired nearly 3 weeks ago. Those rewatches or first-time watches are incredibly impressive, but viewership is naturally falling away with season 5 facing a 45% drop in hours watched this week, in addition to the 70% drop last week. Completely natural.

Week in Top 10 Week Period Hours Viewed Views / CVE Weekly Rank
1 Nov 23 to Nov 30, 2025 284,200,000 (New) 59,600,000 1
2 Nov 30 to Dec 7, 2025 112,700,000 (-60%) 23,600,000 1
3 Dec 7 to Dec 14, 2025 53,200,000 (-53%) 11,200,000 3
4 Dec 14 to Dec 21, 2025 38,900,000 (-27%) 8,200,000 4
5 Dec 21 to Dec 28, 2025 284,800,000 (+632%) 34,500,000 1
6 Dec 28 to Jan 4, 2026 325,600,000 (+14%) 31,300,000 1
7 Jan 4 to Jan 11, 2026 96,400,000 (-70%) 9,300,000 3
8 Jan 11 to Jan 18, 2026 53,500,000 (-45%) 5,100,000 4

Its performance thus far has now boosted it to the #4 spot on Netflix’s English TV all-time top 10 list, pushing Wednesday season 2 down to #5, and Stranger Things 4 being its next target, but will it get there?

For the trajectory, I once again turn to Frederic of Netflix and Chiffres, who has pretty accurately predicted some of the recent split releases from Netflix and where they ultimately end up. Looking at his chart, it’s an absolute nail-biter with season 5 almost neck and neck with season 4, but the question is how much the decay will be in the weeks to come. You could argue the season 5 curve is already a bit more extreme than season 4’s, but there are a few days in it, and every viewing hour counts.

2. Seven Dials Opens Well (With A Catch)

Sevendials Firstlook Image 8Sevendials Firstlook Image 8

Netflix UK kicked off its 2026 slate with an adaptation of an Agatha Christie novel. On the face of it, it opened pretty well with 9.9M views, but that’s on viewing hours of 26.6M. That puts it towards the upper end when compared against other limited series in recent years, but there’s a caveat. With only three episodes (and a runtime essentially that of a very long film), that works against it, given the views formula (hours viewed divided by runtime). In simple terms, it’s easier for shows with lower runtimes to get more views off the bat. Therefore, while this looks like a good start, the viewing hours will have to pick up substantially to keep up with other shows in the coming weeks.

Netflix Viewership Data – 1 Week Analysis

Title Cumulative Views (1 weeks) Rank
Adolescence 24,300,000 1

3. HIS & HERS week 2 and it’s flying high…

Several really big hitters are already in play so far for 2026, and flying high is HIS & HERS, the limited series mystery thriller that already had a strong debut last week and jumped up even higher with a 48% increase in viewing hours in its first full week.

Netflix Viewership Data – 2 Week Analysis

Title Cumulative Views (2 weeks) Rank
Adolescence 66,300,000 1
Untamed – Season 1 50,700,000 2

Keep Breathing 29,300,000 10
American Primeval 24,700,000 11
Baby Reindeer 15,900,000 12

It’s maybe a bit too early to be talking “all-time” top 10, but it’s on the right trajectory, particularly if the series keeps up its word of mouth. You can see it tracking just above The Night Agent season 1 at present, which currently occupies the #1 spot on Netflix’s all-time list at the time of publication.

4. Can This Love Be Translated? Starts Strong

Another Friday means another K-Drama drop, and this week it’s the turn of Can This Love Be Translated?, which saw an unusual big push from Netflix’s US office in terms of marketing, so did it pay off? Somewhat, yes! It debuted with 4M views, which puts it towards the top end compared to other full-season Korean language drops in recent years.

You and Everything Else 1,700,000 10

5. Did People We Meet on Vacation Pick Up?

Last week, it felt especially harsh covering People We Meet on Vacation, given it was the first proper movie out of the gate in 2026, and it performed… well, so-so. In week 2, things have picked up with a 36% increase in viewing hours, jumping from 33.8M to 45.8M, and views going from 17.2M to 23.3M. The verdict? Better, but around the middle of the pack, sitting between Lindsay Lohan’s Irish Wish and Amy Schumer’s Kinda Pregnant.

A Family Affair 58,700,000 1

6. Some More Check-Ins

Let’s begin with the Harlan Coben show now that Run Away is in week 3! Each of these limited series debuted on different days, but that becomes less of a factor as the weeks progress. Still, we can say that compared to the other New Year’s Coben drops, Run Away is now in third place, with Fool Me Once being a total outlier.

We should also update you on Emily in Paris, despite its future being already secure for a 2026 return with season 6. We can’t directly compare with season 4, since it was split across two parts, but we can still see that the show has decayed season over season. As of week 5, when prior seasons dropped out of the weekly top 10s, season 5 is down 25% from season 3, which is still pretty impressive. We suspect season 5 will also drop out next week, so this will be our last check-in until season 6 drops.

Finally, The Great Flood’s race in the most-watched list continues, and it’s almost neck and neck with last year’s Exterritorial.
