Steven Soderbergh is stepping in to help finish filming The Batman Part 2 while director Matt Reeves attends to an ongoing family matter.
According to Deadline, the Oscar-winning filmmaker will help complete the final weeks of principal photography on the DC sequel. Reeves will remain in communication with Soderbergh throughout the process, working closely with him to ensure the footage aligns with his vision. Reeves is expected to take over post-production when he is ready to return.
Soderbergh, known for films including Ocean’s Eleven and Traffic, volunteered to help after expressing his admiration for Reeves’ work on 2022’s The Batman.
“I thought Matt Reeves’ work on The Batman was stunning; it was intentional, specific, and rigorously coherent,” Soderbergh said in a statement. “The goal here is to work with Matt and his team to generate footage that will integrate seamlessly with what’s already been shot so Matt can properly finish his film.”
Production had been underway in London before it was temporarily paused earlier this month to give Reeves time to focus on his family matter. DC Studios previously confirmed the pause and expressed its support for the filmmaker.
It’s unclear whether the interruption will affect the film’s release date. The Batman Part 2 is currently scheduled to hit theaters on Feb. 18, 2028, nearly six years after its predecessor debuted in March 2022.
Robert Pattinson will return as Bruce Wayne, alongside Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth and Colin Farrell as the Penguin. New cast members include Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Brian Tyree Henry, Jayme Lawson, Charles Dance, Gil Perez-Abraham and Sebastian Koch.
Plot details remain largely under wraps, though Reeves has described his connected Batman films and The Penguin spinoff series as the “Batman Epic Crime Saga.”
