The Biggest Shifts in Traveler Behavior Year Over Year

20 February 20263 Mins Read

  • 2026 Vs. 2025: The Biggest Shifts in Traveler Behavior Year Over Year – Image Credit TravelBoom Marketing

A lot can change in a year and in the travel industry, it often does. The behaviors, preferences, and expectations of leisure travelers continue to evolve, shaped by economics, technology, cultural shifts, and new generational priorities.

The 2026 TravelBoom Leisure Travel Study offers a unique year-over-year comparison with 2025, revealing the biggest behavioral changes hotel marketers must understand to stay ahead. This year, travelers showed greater interest in solo trips, wellness and culinary destinations, and increased reliance on AI and social influences. These aren’t minor fluctuations; they’re significant moves that can make or break your hotel’s ability to connect with travelers in a relevant and compelling way.

What’s Changed in Travel Since Last Year?

Here are the top shifts from 2025 to 2026:

  • Solo travel: Up 13 points (from 46% to 59%). No longer a fringe trend, solo travel is now a mainstream behavior – driven by freedom, flexibility, and self-exploration.
  • Wellness travel interest: Up 12 points (from 43% to 55%). Mindfulness, recovery, and fitness are now core reasons to travel. Not add-ons.
  • Use of AI tools: Up 25 points (from 38% to 63%). AI has gone from experimental to essential in the trip-planning journey.
  • Trust in AI: “Extremely trustworthy” ratings jumped from 15% to 29%, proving AI isn’t just popular, but it’s gaining credibility quickly.
  • Social media influence: Up 16 points (from 39% to 55%). Campaigns on social platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok are now primary sources of travel inspiration, especially among Gen Z and Millennials.
  • Food as a top driver: Increased from 73% to nearly 80% of travelers citing it as a key factor in destination choice. Culinary tourism is now a critical booking motivator.

Why This Matters

These aren’t subtle shifts. They’re sharp, strategic redirections. If you’re still relying on last year’s audience insights, messaging, or marketing mix, you’re likely missing the mark in 2026.

Each of these shifts comes with real marketing implications:

  • Are your packages and promotions solo-traveler friendly?
  • Have you integrated wellness into your brand story?
  • Is your hotel showing up in AI-generated recommendations?
  • Are you using short-form video to inspire dreamers into bookers?
  • Is your restaurant, menu, or food partnerships front and center in your content?

Bonus Insight: Many of these shifts are stacking—not replacing—other behaviors. For example, travelers are still price-sensitive, but they’re also prioritizing flexibility, personal value, and authenticity more than ever.

The TravelBoom Takeaway

Traveler behavior isn’t evolving gradually—it’s leaping forward. And the hospitality brands that move with it will see stronger engagement, higher conversions, and more direct bookings. Use this data to inform your quarterly planning, campaign development, and guest experience strategies.
