The Devil Wears Prada 2 follows up The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’s sequel success

The Devil Wears Prada 2 had a great opening weekend at the box office, both domestically and internationally. The Devil Wears Prada 2 follows in the footsteps of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie as a very successful sequel to a popular film. It also continues a streak of expectation-beating theatrical releases like Project Hail Mary and Michael.

Deadline reports that The Devil Wears Prada 2 grossed $77 million in the United States over its first three days in theaters. It also did well internationally, with a worldwide opening weekend gross of $233.6 million. That gives it the second-biggest worldwide opening of 2026, only behind The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

That Illumination flick continues to do well, as it grossed $12 million and outperformed Andy Serkis’ new animated Animal Farm adaptation. The continued success of that kids’ film and the strong start to the adult-oriented The Devil Wears Prada 2 show just how much power sequels can have in getting people back to theaters.

As The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Michael’s success have shown, box office returns don’t always correlate with critical praise. The Devil Wears Prada 2 shows that being a good film doesn’t hurt, though, as it has positive critic and user ratings on both Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes.

Polygon has not reviewed The Devil Wears Prada 2, but Screen Rant’s review argues that the movie’s “level of talent and craft on display is terrific, and the moments of genuine fun found in the performances, writing, and visuals are infectious.” Expect The Devil Wears Prada 2 to remain in theaters for a while before eventually coming to Disney+.
