The Edmonton Group Chat: What your friends are talking about this week (Aug. 11)

11 August 20264 Mins Read

Welcome to Edmonton’s group chat, your weekly roundup of what’s trending, what’s new, and what’s actually worth talking about. Here, we can get the hottest events and news right to your phone and group chat without any issues. If your friends are talking about it, you’re going to find everything you need to know right in this article.

The summer in Edmonton continues to see rain, but the festivals and events never cease. Despite the weather, there’s been loads of things happening in the city, including new stores, drive-in movies, and early openings of a go-to Halloween destination.

We’ve got you and your group chat covered, so let’s go ahead and chat about what’s going on in the city this week.

What’s trending, Edmonton?

The rain continues to take over the city this summer

Most of this week will continue to see a chance of the same showers that have been plaguing Edmonton this entire summer. On Thursday, Aug. 13 and Friday, Aug. 14, there will be a 60 and 30 per cent chance of showers, with the high for both days not reaching above 20°C.

If you’re wanting to enjoy the weekend, however, Saturday is going to see sunshine throughout the day, reaching a nice high of 22°C.

No worries, you’ll still be able to enjoy a drive-in movie this week

Last month, Edmonton Valley hosted four different drive-in movies across two days, all thanks to Horizon Drive-In. After the success of the first two days in July, the team decided to bring back more action for August. This week, you can get ready to drive on down, grab a ticket, and enjoy a movie from the sanctity of your own vehicle.

The four movies being featured this time around are Footloose, 21 Jump Street, The Greatest Showman, and IT.

Or, maybe you’ll want to explore the Fringe instead

Edmonton Fringe Festival is coming up this week, and we couldn’t be more excited for the endless number of musicals, plays, and performances ahead of us.

This year, as of now, there are over 200 shows going on during the festival, taking over a wide range of venues. You’re now able to purchase tickets to your favourite performances ahead of the festival, or in-person at the venue, with all shows guaranteed to be $20 or less.

Don’t forget, this mall just announced the first Edmonton location of this Asian beauty store

As of now, there are 15 open Sukoshi locations across Canada. There are only two store locations in Alberta: one in Calgary and one in Rocky View County. Over this past weekend, Kingsway Mall just announced it’d be getting the third Sukoshi location in Alberta, slated to open soon, with two more also on the way (in Richmond and Burnaby).

This means loads more Asian beauty products in the mall, as well as K-pop merchandise, blind boxes, and lifestyle goods.

Want to shop now? The Spirit Halloween in West Edmonton Mall is already open

Ahead of the curve, Spirit Halloween has opened a bunch of locations, including two in Edmonton. And, one of these locations can actually be found right inside West Edmonton Mall.

In the old Bed Bath & Beyond site within the mall, you’ll be able to find a hot spot for everything Halloween-related. If you want to get a head start on the holiday, now’s your best chance to check out the fresh stock on its shelves!
