The name of the Minecraft movie sequel couldn’t be more fitting

During a Minecraft Live showcase at TwitchCon Europe, Mojang confirmed that the sequel to A Minecraft Movie is officially titled A Minecraft Movie Squared.

Considering the whole square-based voxel aesthetic of the Minecraft world, it’s a fitting title for a sequel. A short behind-the-scenes video of the production was also shown. In it, actors Jack Black, Jason Momoa, and Danielle Brooks hype up filming in New Zealand and tease that new biomes and mobs from the base game will appear in the movie. New cast members Matt Berry and Kirsten Dunst also introduced themselves.

Mojang also announced and kicked off a build challenge for A Minecraft Movie Squared. Between now and June 8, players can create and submit special builds for a chance to be featured in the movie. Only the winner’s build will make the sequel’s final cut, but other finalists will get private screenings of A Minecraft Movie Squared. People can also earn a builder cape cosmetic by watching Minecraft on Twitch or TikTok between now and June 14 The sequel will come to theaters on July 23, 2027.

Although A Minecraft Movie Squared’s title reveal was the biggest announcement from the latest Minecraft Live, it wasn’t the only thing announced. Mojang showed off some upcoming updates for the game. That includes Chaos Cubed, which adds a sulfur cave biome and sulfur cube mob on June 16. Drop 3 will follow later this year, adding the dappled forest biome.

The Minecraft Dungeons 2 development team showed concept art for new biomes in the sequel and for the Deep Dark’s Twisted Warden boss. We’ve yet to see gameplay, but it’s still slated to launch in 2026. The Twisted Warden is also getting a Lego Minecraft figure of its own, and Lego chicken mounts are coming to Minecraft proper.

Looking at everything announced at Minecraft Live, it’s clear that Mojang and Microsoft intend to keep the franchise relevant in players’ minds ahead of the release of A Minecraft Movie Squared.
