The ultimate winter fun itinerary for a weekend trip in Ottawa

11 February 20264 Mins Read

Looking for a perfect winter escape? Ottawa, Canada’s capital, offers an unforgettable blend of seasonal charm, cultural attractions, and cozy culinary experiences.

With its urban energy, natural beauty, and festive winter events, Ottawa is ideal for a three-day getaway. The city is easily accessible, being just a 1 hour and 15 minutes flight from Toronto Pearson, or a roughly four-and-a-half hour drive for those who love a road trip.

Here’s your ultimate winter itinerary to make the most of a weekend in the city.

Day 1: Dive into Ottawa’s winter wonderland

Start your trip with a visit to one of Ottawa’s world-class museums. The Canadian Museum of Nature immerses you in the wonders of wildlife and geology with seven fascinating galleries full of dinosaur fossils, mammals, minerals, birds, live insects, and more, while the National Gallery of Canada features world-renowned contemporary and historical artworks. You could also stop by the Canadian Museum of History, which is one of Canada’s most visited museums and home to the world’s largest indoor collection of totem poles, along with the biggest exhibition about Canadian history. With the 3-Day Ottawa Museums Pass, you can access multiple national museums for just $30 this winter — perfect for culture enthusiasts.

Then, explore Winterlude, Ottawa’s iconic winter festival. Stroll through sparkling ice sculptures at Confederation Park, enjoy live performances, and discover the playful snow zones perfect for all ages. Don’t miss the chance to take photos of the festival’s intricate ice carvings — and snap a selfie with the iconic Ice Hogs. New for this year is Lantern Grove, a magical forest where glowing lights, sound, and winter wonder come together in an unforgettable immersive experience for all ages. Winterlude’s festivities began on Jan. 30 and will run until Feb. 16.

Finish your trip with a classic Ottawa experience: skate along the Rideau Canal Skateway, the world’s largest skating rink. Afterwards, grab a beverage or snack at one of the Canal’s hot chocolate vendors or heated huts.

The perfect, action-packed first day in Ottawa? We think so!

Day 2: Experience Indigenous culture and culinary delights

Head to Mādahòkì Farm during the Pibòn Festival for an excellent experience that’s equal parts educational and fun. Enjoy authentic Indigenous programming, an Indigenous Makers and Farmers Market, interactive creative workshops, and even a taste of Indigenous winter comfort meals.

Afterwards, indulge in Ottawa’s vibrant food scene. Start with a leisurely brunch at a local restaurant like Wilf & Ada’s, Benny’s Bistro, or Chesterfield’s, then explore family-friendly restaurants or fine dining options that showcase local flavours. No winter visit is complete without a stop at a sugar shack, so be sure to treat yourself to some maple taffy!

Then, end the day by winding down at one of Ottawa’s relaxing spas or wellness retreats, such as Holtz Spa right in downtown or Koēna just a 15 minute drive from city centre, the perfect way to soothe tired muscles after a full day of winter adventures.

Day 3: Urban exploration

Now it’s time to live like a local! Explore Ottawa’s charming neighbourhoods and streets, taking in local shops, galleries, and winter markets. Enjoy the crisp winter air as you stroll through Westboro for boutique shopping and trendy restaurants, visit The Glebe for charming and historic buildings, or check out Hintonburg for hipster, artsy vibes.

Mid-day, return to cultural immersion by visiting any remaining national museums or galleries included in your 3-Day Ottawa Museums Pass (because there are a lot!).

Last but not least, end your day with a delicious dinner at one of Ottawa’s top restaurants. Try Dreamland Pasta Cafe & Bar for exquisite fresh pasta, Pho by Night for authentic Vietnamese dishes, or Alora for reimagined comfort food and a rooftop bar.

So, there you have it! From festive events like Winterlude to charming neighbourhoods, cultural experiences, and unforgettable food, there’s something for every type of traveller. Pack your warmest layers and get planning your winter escape over on the Ottawa Tourism website now.
