The Vancouver Group Chat: What your friends are talking about this week (Sept. 8)

8 September 20264 Mins Read

Welcome back to the Vancouver Group Chat, your go-to for some of the city’s biggest updates. With the last long weekend of summer now a wrap, you might be inclined to think that the city is winding down. On the contrary, there are so many things to look forward to this upcoming season, and we’re here to share them all with you.

What’s new, Vancouver?

Summer might be over soon, but the sunsets are only getting better

Fall officially begins in two weeks, but the summer sunset vibes are far from over. This post on the Vancouver Reddit page is absolutely blowing up right now, showing just how magical Vancouver can be when the clouds, sunset colours, and time of day align.

The sunset on Labour Day (Sept. 7) was truly out of a painting, and we were lucky enough to be on a classic Kits Beach walk when the sun set.

A bright red sun, glittering water, and mountains clad in orange were certainly a treat for the eyes. And in true Vancouver fashion, everyone immediately stopped what they were doing to snap a photo.

A new coffee concept built around families

Jude is a new coffee concept by Strathcona’s hidden gem, Peace and Culture Coffee, and it’s every bit as intriguing as its predecessor.

The pop-up coffee residency is part of a new kids’ studio and cafe experience soon opening on West 8th called Particles. If you were around over Labour Day weekend, you might have caught a sneak peek ahead of its grand opening!

There are five menu items total, all made with premium ingredients by master baristas, according to their current website.

The cafe is tip-free and fair-wage, so you can feel good about your coffee spending and enjoy a new third space, specifically designed with families in mind.

Aside from great coffee, Particles is set to offer enrichment classes, drop-in playdates, birthdays, and other events where families of all kinds can get to know each other.

Stay tuned for upcoming opening deets.

Commercial Drive releases its fall programming

Get ready to save some dates. The Drive is gearing up for an eventful fall, complete with art crawls, Oktoberfest fun, and live comedy. Who said cozy season is for staying at home?!

Oktoberfest kicks things off on Sept. 28, with participating breweries and bars across East Van pouring the best Bavarian brews and plating up traditional Oktoberfest fare until Oct. 4.

On Saturday, Oct. 24, Comedy on the Drive is bringing all the laughs to York Theatre. Four amazing local comedians will light up the stage, and it’s the perfect excuse to drag a friend or a date out. Tickets for this night go live on Thursday, Sept. 10.

Next, Halloween takes the Drive in a massive trick-or-treating event on Oct. 31 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. So if you’re looking for a family-friendly spot to show off your costume this year, this is a great option.

From Nov. 19 to 22, the 30th annual Eastside Culture Crawl once again opens up hundreds of East Van studios to the public, allowing every kind of art lover the chance to meet local makers, purchase one-of-a-kind creations, and see where all the magic happens.

Finally, Christmas Wonderland returns to Grandview Park on Nov. 29. Here, you’ll be able to get that classic family photo with Santa, witness the tree lighting, enjoy a horse and carriage ride, and indulge in holiday treats galore.

Vancouver’s last car-free day of 2026

Before we get anywhere close to late fall — we come to Vancouver’s final Car-Free Day of the year. Set to transform Main Street (from 10th to King Edward), the day will be jam-packed with excitement.

This Sunday, Sept. 13, you can head to the festivities between noon and 7 p.m., taking advantage of all-day live music across five stages and tons of local vendors.

Your sign to do something random

We’ll catch you next week, Vancouver!
