There’s a new 1.1 km trail and pedestrian bridge to explore in Toronto

28 August 20263 Mins Read

A new multi-use trail and bridge has just opened in Scarborough as part of a massive project transforming Toronto’s hydro corridor lands.

It forms part of the section of The Meadoway, a planned 16 km green corridor. It will eventually connect the East Don Trail with Rouge National Park.

What to know about new trail at The Meadoway

Where is the new trail section?

According to the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA), the newly opened portion extends from south of Arsandco Park, across Midland Avenue, to Marcos Boulevard, south of Lawrence Avenue East.

What was added?

Additions to the section include a new multi-use trail that spans 1.1 km, a signalized crossing at Midland Avenue, and a pedestrian-cyclist bridge over a tributary of Highland Creek.

What is The Meadoway?

Per the TRCA, The Meadoway will be a 16-kilometre urban greenspace for walking, cycling, and other activities.

Once it is fully complete, the project will transform about 200 hectares of hydro corridor lands. It will then become, according to the TRCA, one of Canada’s largest naturalized urban green spaces.

Where will The Meadoway connect?

The new corridor will connect the East Don Trail in the west with Rouge National Urban Park in the east. It will eventually create a continuous route through Scarborough and link communities across the region, per the TRCA.

What will The Meadoway include once it is completed?

It will link seven river systems, 15 parks, 16 kilometers of trails, 13 neighbourhoods, 100 hectares of meadow, and over 1,000 species of flora and fauna.

How did the project begin?

According to the TRCA, The Meadoway was launched in 2018, thanks to the success of the Scarborough Centre Butterfly Trail in 2012.

This new project will further support the TRCA’s Trail Strategy goal of establishing a 1,000-kilometre regional trail network.

This will extend from Lake Ontario to the Greenbelt. Per the TRCA, it will also “connect to the Loop Trail, an initiative led in partnership by the City of Toronto, Evergreen, the Toronto Foundation, and TRCA.”
