These are the best spots in Edmonton that are perfect for a summer walk

3 July 20263 Mins Read

With the weather warming up and the sun in the sky, summer is the perfect time to explore Edmonton and go on a walk.

From awesome parks to picturesque promenades, we’ve rounded up six of the best spots in Edmonton to go on a walk this summer.

A favourite among south-central Edmonton residents, Mill Creek Ravine Park is perfect for summer walks, stretching the length of the ravine with kilometres of scenic trails for all ages and abilities. From wide, paved pathways to quieter forested routes, it’s easy to find a trail that suits your pace. The park is accessible from several parking lots and multiple cycling connections along the ravine. Despite being surrounded by the city, the towering trees and lush greenery make it feel like a true escape from it all.

Where: 96th Street and 76th Avenue NW, Edmonton

This pristine slice of nature is home to old-growth forest, more than 150 species of birds, and plenty of wildlife. Even though Fox Drive, Whitemud Drive, and 23rd Avenue on the southern edge are nearby, the surrounding natural oasis does a fantastic job of blocking it all out. Whether you’re looking to do a little exploring, go bird watching, or get away from it all, this is a fantastic spot to do it (just don’t forget the bug spray).

Where: 13204 Fox Dr. NW to 23rd Avenue NW

Government House Park sits on the north bank of the river, tucked beside Groat Road. The peaceful scenery invites you to stay a while, with shady picnic spots and places to sit and watch the river float by. Plus, with a network of paved trails, it’s the perfect place for a stroll on a quiet summer day.

Where: 9938 Groat Rd. NW

Victoria Promenade

The Victoria Promenade may not be as long as others on this list, but it may be the most picturesque. It runs along the river valley just west of downtown, offering wide pathways, blooming trees, and uninterrupted views of the North Saskatchewan River valley. There’s plenty of benches along the way if you want to soak in the skyline, too.

Where: 11716 100th Ave. NW

Sandwiched between Fort Edmonton Park and Wolf Willow Ravine, this scenic route crosses the North Saskatchewan River on one of Edmonton’s most picturesque footbridges. Accessible from the parking lot at the south end of Fort Edmonton Park, it’s also easy to reach from the north side of the river via Jan Reimer Park or the Wolf Willow stairs and trail. Along the way, you’ll enjoy sweeping views of the river valley, Fort Edmonton Park and the steep riverbanks.

Where: 1307 Woodward Pl. NW, Edmonton

Much Whitemud Creek, the descent into Emily Murphy Park feels far more like leaving the city behind. Surrounded by mature trees and riverside trails, it’s an ideal spot for a peaceful walk without ever leaving the urban core. From the park, you can extend your hike by crossing into Hawrelak Park or continue along the river valley trail network to explore even more of Edmonton’s green spaces.

Where: 11904 Emily Murphy Park Rd. NW
