Pioneer Acres is a 50-acre outdoor museum located just 45 minutes northeast of Calgary, where history isn’t stuck behind glass. You can step inside historic buildings, get up close to giant steam engines and vintage tractors, and explore the machines that bring Alberta’s past to life.

After starting as an annual agricultural equipment show in 1969, Pioneer Acres has grown from a local showcase into one of Alberta’s largest agricultural museums, filled with stories, collections, and artifacts that highlight the province’s evolution over the years.

What to know about Pioneer Acres

According to Pioneer Acres, the museum is one of Alberta’s largest agricultural and industrial history museums, with thousands of artifacts showcasing everything from farming equipment and transportation to household items and personal belongings. The collection focuses on preserving objects connected to Alberta’s history, specifically from the settlement period in the late 1800s through to the 1980s.

Today, the museum spans 50 acres and features over 20 historic buildings, and with so much space to cover, it’s easy to spend hours wandering through the museum’s collections and displays.

Must-see attractions at Pioneer Acres

One of the major highlights is Pioneer World, where visitors can learn more about the daily life of a homemaker during the pioneering era. The exhibit offers a look at the household items, tools, and traditions that shaped life more than a century ago.

And for anyone who loves vintage vehicles, the Truck Museum features a collection of restored trucks from the early to mid-1900s, including vehicles that tell the story of transportation on the prairies.

While Pioneer Acres is worth exploring any time during the summer, the museum’s events are when the grounds really come to life. The Summer Tractor Pull, happening on Saturday, July 18 and Sunday, July 19, 2026, turns the property into a gathering place for machinery enthusiasts, with powerful vintage tractors competing in a weekend of fun.

The museum’s biggest event of the year is Alberta’s Pioneer Steam Power Festival, which brings together some of the most impressive pieces from Pioneer Acres’ collection. At the event, you’ll have the opportunity to watch half a dozen steam traction engines and other historic equipment in action, enjoy parades, tractor pulls, and more.

Plan your visit – tickets and pricing

Pioneer Acres is located 45 minutes northeast of Calgary, a short drive north of the town of Irricana, making it an easy summer day trip outside the city. The museum is open until Monday, Sept. 7, 2026, with admission starting at $9 per person. And with more than 20 buildings to explore, you can easily spend several hours wandering through the exhibits.

So this is your reminder that history doesn’t have to be something you only read about. At Prairie Acres, the stories are built into the buildings, machines, and objects that have been carefully preserved over the years. And who knows, you might just leave with a new appreciation for steam engines!

When: Open Thursday to Monday until Sept. 7, 2026
Time: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Where: 263204 Township Rd. 274, Rocky View County, Alta.
Cost: Starting at $9
