When you think of swimmable lakes in Alberta, places like Sylvan Lake and Gull Lake most likely come to mind. But tucked away in central Alberta is another spot that deserves a spot on your summer bucket list, especially if you’re looking for sandy beaches, swimming areas, and a laid-back atmosphere.
Gleniffer Lake has quietly become a favourite among campers, boaters and beach-goers looking to escape from the city for a day or a full weekend. It’s the kind of place that makes you wonder why more people aren’t talking about it.
Beaches, boating and easy lake days
Located roughly an hour and a half from Calgary and two hours from Edmonton, the area has become a popular summer spot thanks to its large sandy beaches, swimming areas, and quiet setting. Even on warm summer days, you’ll still be able to find a spot along the shoreline.
One of the things that makes Gleniffer Lake stand out is its water. According to Gleniffer Lake, it is considered one of the cleanest lakes in Alberta, so you can relax in the water without thinking too much. The reservoir stretches approximately seven kilometres, and even on busy days, there is plenty of space to explore.
According to Alberta Parks, boating is a big draw here, with multiple boat launches located near the reservoir. Whether you’re paddleboarding, kayaking, or boating, the wide-open water makes it easy to spend hours cruising around or finding your own quiet spot.
Beyond the lake itself, there are a few nearby amenities that can turn a simple beach day into a full weekend getaway. Just steps away from the lake lies Gleniffer Lake Resort and Country Club, a 9-hole course set among lush fairways with gorgeous lakeside views.
Not every Alberta Lake needs to be packed with people to be worth visiting. Gleniffer Lake is a bit more low-key, with beaches, space to swim, and plenty of room to enjoy a summer day without it feeling hectic. Whether it’s a spontaneous swim or a weekend away, it’s a nice reminder that some of the best summer days are the simplest ones.
