“Phones have created a new visual language” — the words of a director who just released a unique new music video to accompany a Billboard chart-topper that’s been dominating dance-radio stations.
The video also arrives one day after the Video Music Awards, a night ruled expectedly by Taylor Swift — but also by Madonna, who gave a show-stopping performance alongside Sabrina Carpenter as well as a memorable acceptance speech.
Swift, 36, also accepted her first award since tying the knot with Travis Kelce. And on that note, photographers knew exactly how to get her attention on the VMAs red carpet, calling her “Mrs. Kelce” a number of times.
And now, the show must go on, as they say. Music videos continue to roll out, with a unique one dropping on YouTube Monday, September 28. Those familiar with the electronic dance music scene may recognize the track “Happiness Is So Sad” by Swedish House Mafia and Lykke Li.
Even if it doesn’t ring a bell, the just-released video is groundbreaking in that it was shot entirely on roughly 25 phones, according to a news release. Check it out in full below.
Fans have already flooded the upload’s comments section to show their support for the song and alternative approach to the music video. “The aspect ratio make you forget about the insane work that went into this MV,” said one YouTube user, while another person simply commented, “Such a beautiful video! 😍”
“Phones have created a new visual language,” director Theo Lindquist said in a statement. “It hasn’t really been exploited in storytelling properly, and here was an opportunity.”
The house party took place in Guadalajara, Mexico, with the video focusing on different characters experience their own versions of the same night. Per Monday’s news release, the film was written around the idea that everybody is the main character of their own night and a background figure in everyone else’s, with each phone catching a different piece of the same party.
