15 October 20263 Mins Read

Castle Provincial Park spans a massive area that offers some of the most stunning natural beauty in Alberta, with endless trails and adventure opportunities, tons of wildlife, and its very own waterfall.

According to Alberta Parks, Castle Provincial Park protects more than 25,500 hectares and over 200 rare species of plants and animals in the South Canadian Rocky Mountains. Here, you’ll be able to keep yourself busy all year-round with activities like hiking, scrambling, paddling, fishing, biking, snowmobiling, and so much more.

If you’re looking for an outdoorsy escape this fall, this provincial park is absolutely going to deliver.

What to know before visiting Castle Provincial Park

Where is Castle Provincial Park located?

You’ll find this Albertan provincial park located southwest of Pincher Creek, about two and a half hours south of Calgary.

The park itself is in the heart of the wild Castle region and, according to Alberta Parks, is “a critical link in the international Crown of the Continent ecosystem”.

What is there to do in the area?

Alberta Parks has outlined a bunch of activities you’re able to enjoy in the area, including:

  • Hiking
  • Scrambling
  • Paddling
  • Fishing (both summer and winter seasons)
  • Biking
  • OHV riding
  • Snowmobiling
  • Cross-country skiing
  • Horseback riding
  • Hunting
  • Camping

Castle Provincial Park has some of the best trails, as well as endless scenic landscape views. You can even check out the waterfall in the park, Castle Falls, a gorgeous sight all year long.

There are also free interpretive programs for guests to take part in during the summer season.

Are there still things to do during the winter?

Over the winter months, the provincial park offers a wonderful area for:

  • Nordic skiing
  • Ice fishing
  • Snoeshowing
  • Fat biking
  • OHVs and snowmobiles

According to Alberta Parks, Castle Provincial Park’s camping amenities close for the winter season. They note Beauvais Lake Provincial Park as the nearest winter camping destination with first-come, first-served camping.

Where are the best places to stay?

If you’re looking to make this trip an overnighter, here are some non-camping accommodations within Castle Provincial Park:

Is camping allowed in Castle Provincial Park?

You will find a wide range of camping opportunities from basic first-come, first-served to comfort camping and everything in between at Castle Provincial Park. They even provide a park and campground map online.

Most campgrounds within the park will be open until Nov. 30, and then they will close for the season.

You can find each campground’s specific information on the Alberta Parks website.

What kind of wildlife is in the area?

According to Alberta Parks, the surrounding landscape has an abundance of wildlife, including but not limited to:

  • Moose
  • Deer
  • Elk
  • Cougars
  • Black bears
  • Grizzly bears

Alberta Parks has a great guide on how to safely view wildlife within provincial parks. Visitors are recommended to discover, explore and experience nature while remembering you’re a guest in their home.

So, if you’re looking to take a journey into the wild, Castle Provincial Park is a great local spot to check out this season. With waterfalls, hikes, camping, and more, your next trek is going to be a good one.
