This small town in Alberta was featured in ‘Interstellar’ and ‘The Last of Us’

16 July 20263 Mins Read

Nanton, Alta., knows all about that small-town charm; in fact, it’s basically pioneered it in the province. The rest of the world has seemed to figure that out as well, as many have come to this spot to film some of the most popular visual media in the 21st century.

According to the Town of Nanton, the Village of Nanton was incorporated in 1903. It only finally became the town we’ve come to know in 1907. Since then, it’s grown into a charming town with lots to offer for those not just in Alberta, but also those around the world. It’s definitely a popular tourist destination for those coming from outside the province.

Here, you’ll find a whole bunch of historical buildings, a warm atmosphere, and a place that genuinely comes straight out of the movies.

What movies were filmed in Nanton?

Not only can you retrace Joel and Ellie’s steps from HBO’s The Last of Us, but those who visit Nanton can also enjoy knowing that the area played a role in Christopher Nolan’s Academy Award-winning film Interstellar.

In addition to these fan favourites, Reminders of Him was released in 2026 and was also shot within the town. In fact, the entire film was locally filmed. Longview, High River, and Calgary are some of the other municipalities where they were filming.

What is there to do in Nanton?

Not only are there beautiful open prairie views, but there are more than a few things to check out.

You can visit quirky attractions like the Museum of Miniatures and the informative Bomber Command Museum. Or, maybe you’ll want to see the famous candy store and golf course. Honestly? All of these are great options, and you’re sure to have fun no matter which ones you choose to visit.

However, one of the most popular attractions is the Grain Elevator Discovery Centre.

This living piece of Alberta’s agricultural history stands tall against the prairie sky. As a cherished local landmark, the town invites visitors to explore their rich heritage and discover the stories of those who worked the land. You can even experience the past coming alive through their interactive exhibits and guided tours.

You’ll definitely want to check out The Centre while you’re there. The Centre features exhibits that showcase the evolution of grain farming and the grain trade in Alberta. There will be loads of historical artifacts, photographs, and interesting information you can sift through. Evidently, years of history can be found in this one spot.

Your next Alberta road trip definitely has to have this place as a stop. With history, entertainment, and a whole lot to uncover, it’s certain your visit to Nanton will be nothing short of spectacular.
