This tiny Alberta town has a real-life hobbit hole you can stay in

30 May 20263 Mins Read

Tucked away just outside of Three Hills, Alta., is a stay that looks like it belongs in a fantasy movie. The Burrow is a hobbit-style cottage built right into the hillside, blending into the landscape so well that it’s almost easy to miss. It feels more like a hidden film set rather than an Airbnb.

Inside The Burrow

If you’re sick of staying at your usual hotels, The Burrow might just be the place for you. It’s a cozy, private cottage, nestled right into the hillside. Inside, the space opens up to about 650 square feet and includes five rooms: a long entry hallway, one bedroom, a sitting room with a fireplace, a kitchen, and a bathroom.

Outside the cottage, you’ll find a private fenced yard that includes a cedar hot tub, BBQ, firepit, and seating area that overlooks the valley.

The Burrow is actually part of a much larger property that’s run by Good Knights Entertainment. According to organizers, the company has been building out a medieval-inspired experience since 2017, which originally started as gatherings for medieval re-enactors before evolving into full-scale stays.

Today, the property includes everything from medieval glamping experiences to themed stays and immersive weekend getaways that are designed to feel like you’ve stepped into another world.

Plan your next escape

The Burrow is located about 10 km south of Three Hills, and is roughly an hour drive from Calgary.

It sleeps four to five guests with two queen beds and one roll-out single bed, making it a great option for couples, families, or a group getaway.

Although meals are not included, the cottage has a full kitchen and a barbecue with everything you need to cook your own food. And if you don’t feel like cooking, there are medieval-style feasts held on-site for an additional cost, which enhances the overall experience.

The cottage itself is fully heated, making it the perfect place to stay year-round, especially as the weather cools.

Pricing starts at around $494 per night, but what you’re really paying for here is the experience- it’s a stay that feels very different than your typical hotel or cabin rental.

So if a hobbit-style getaway sounds like your thing, then you have to check out The Burrow. And with it being an hour away from the city, you get that easy escape without having to venture too far from home.

When: Open year-round
Time: Open 24 hours
Where: 235035 Township Rd. 310, Three Hills, Alta.
Cost: Starting at $494 per night
