When you think of freshwater beaches in Ontario, names like Wasaga, Sauble and Grand Bend probably come to mind first. But tucked along the shores of Lake Huron is another sandy summer escape with crystal-clear blue water that deserves a spot on your summer road trip bucket list.
Ipperwash Beach is nestled in Lambton Shores, just under a three-hour drive from Toronto and about an hour west of London. It’s perfectly doable as a day trip if you head out early enough, but definitely consider making it a weekend escape if you’re looking for some quiet time by the water. Ipperwash occupies a more secluded stretch of Lake Huron, so it’s a great spot if you’re looking to avoid the usual summer beach crowds.
Despite its zen vibes, it’s also one of Ontario’s longest freshwater beaches, so it’s perfect for a day of swimming in the shallow waters, walking along the sand or stretching out in the sun.

For midday eats, visit the Ipperwash Beach Club patio on West Parkway Drive. The beachside spot serves up casual comfort meals along with more than 25 flavours of ice cream, making it a perfect post-swim stop!
Take a break from the beach towel and head to the Ipperwash Dunes and Swales Trail. The 5.5-kilometre trek winds through Carolinian forest, sand ridges and wet swales, with some seriously scenic stretches along the way. There’s also a shorter 2.2-kilometre Cedar Trail, where you can loop through a shaded, aromatic hollow packed with cedars. Then, head inland to Rock Glen Conservation Area in Arkona: it’s known for its recreational walking trails through Carolinian forest, with views of the scenic Rock Glen Falls.
Nature lovers can explore more of the area’s coastal dune ecosystems via Pinery Provincial Park: it’s about a 10-minute drive from the beach, and is filled with rolling boardwalks, a 14-kilometre bike trail and world-famous sunsets.
You can also expand your visit beyond the great outdoors. Lambton Heritage Museum near Grand Bend brings to life the stories of the people and places that shaped Lambton County. It’s located close to the Lambton Shores Farmers’ Market, so you can pick up some local produce, baked goods and snacks for the road trip home.
For dinner, head to Veslo Grand Bend Restaurant on Lakeshore Road for homemade, European-style comfort food. Many of the dishes come with home-style potato fries and coleslaw, so, a perfect way to refuel after a day of wandering. Then, end the evening at Sweet Bites Ice Cream and Restaurant on West Ipperwash Road for a frozen treat.
If this is part of a weekend escape, consider visiting Grand Bend or pairing your beach getaway with other gorgeous Lake Huron stops nearby.
