Vivienne Medrano reveals her plan for Helluva Boss / Hazbin Hotel crossovers

13 September 20263 Mins Read

When the news dropped in April 2025 that Vivienne Medrano’s adult animated musical series Helluva Boss would join its companion series Hazbin Hotel on Prime Video, Amazon released a video promising a few specific things. Medrano’s animation studio Spindlehorse would retain full creative control. New Helluva Boss episodes would eventually be released free on YouTube, alongside the show’s previous two seasons. And for the first time, the two shows would cross over in some way, apart from being set in the same shared universe.

With part 1 of Helluva Boss‘ two-part third season launching on Oct. 14, Polygon asked Medrano whether we should expect that crossover this season, and what it might look like. She told us exclusively to watch for visual crossovers in the first half of the season, with bigger plans for the second half, coming in 2027.

“We’d actually written [part 1] before the relationship with Amazon became finalized, so that’s why [the crossovers are] more in the second half,” Medrano said. “It does start this season, [but] more of the exciting crossover potential is in the second half. But what’s fun about the first half is, on the visual side, we were able to lean into that crossoverness. We were able to go, ‘Oh, we can actually maybe see Hazbin characters.’ So you might see some things.”

Medrano explains that the second half of season 3, written after the Amazon pickup, has a more direct crossover, though it’s still comparatively small. “For now, just to keep the narratives as streamlined as possible, it’s more just getting the opportunity to maybe see a character or something. But there is some exciting potential — a little bit more than a cameo that will definitely happen this season. Obviously, I don’t wanna spoil who might show up in season 3.2. [But] I’m a big fan of the bigger, full-on, focused crossover. So fingers crossed we’ll get to do that at some point.”

As far as the reason season 3 is being released in two parts, Medrano says she was eager to get the first half out as quickly as possible, without waiting until next year for the entire season to be complete.

“The season is 15 episodes, which to anyone who’s used to how animation is produced nowadays, is a lot,” she says. “It’s basically two seasons worth of episodes nowadays. With the Amazon release, my goal was to get the show to people as soon as possible, so it made more sense to split the season. It did mean the finale episode of this first part wasn’t really written to be a finale. But we were able to give it a little bit of finesse, so it has a little more of a finale feeling. It was already a pretty thematically big episode, which worked out really well. We didn’t write it to be a finale point, but I think we were able to make it [read] that way. It definitely is not the end of the story. I wouldn’t say it’s a cliffhanger. But it’s for sure a midpoint in the season, story-wise.”
