Just 90 minutes from Toronto sits a charming Ontario town that offers the most picture-perfect fall escape, complete with a historic bridge overlooking scenic ponds and colourful foliage that could almost (just almost) compete with what you’d find in Algonquin Park.
Waterford is nestled in Norfolk County and is dotted with scenic waterways and surrounded by peaceful countryside, but the real highlight is the Black Bridge, a century-old railway crossing stretching 166 metres over the Waterford Ponds! The structure is surrounded by trees that turn beautiful shades of gold, orange and red in autumn, and it really looks like something straight out of a fall postcard.
The bridge was built in 1916 and was once part of the town’s busy railway network, transporting passengers and freight through southwestern Ontario and helping connect local communities to markets.
Today, the bridge has been transformed into a pedestrian and cycling passageway, complete with a wooden deck, protective railings and scenic lookouts, and is now part of the Waterford Heritage Trail.
Visitors can take in panoramic views of the ponds to the west and Waterford’s pretty downtown core to the east, making it a beautiful spot for an autumn stroll or bike ride.
For the most scenic outing, the Heritage Trail connects to the Shadow Lake Trail, which winds alongside the water and offers beautiful sunset views! A connecting staircase and access slope lead down from the main trail to the ponds and Shadow Lake loop (you can even access the trails from several points around town).
Stop for a coffee at Belching Barista on Alice St. Cute name, yes, but it’s also Norfolk County’s first and only specialty coffee roaster, so make sure to pick up a bag of ethically sourced beans for the road. If you’re in town early enough, grab some breakfast or lunch at Kerry’s St. James St. Eatery for homestyle plates or Barlow’s Subs on Main St. S. for made-to-order sandwiches.
Afterward, browse the year-round Waterford Antique Market for antiques, figurines and rare collectibles (you’ll find the most unique Christmas gifts!) before stopping by the Waterford Heritage & Agricultural Museum: it’s housed in a former pickle factory and explores the town’s agricultural and industrial past through historical artifacts and rotating exhibitions.
Consider extending your trip to the picturesque town of Paris, Ontario. It’s just a 30-minute drive from Waterford and is filled with charming 19th-century cobblestone buildings and scenic riverside views.
