The ASUS ROG Flow Z13-KJP is a love letter to Kojima fans

As a dad who spends his weekends hiking through the BC wilderness and his weekdays managing product roadmaps, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for gear that serves a dual purpose. I want tools that are rugged enough for the journey but sophisticated enough to handle serious work — and maybe a few rounds of Death Stranding after the kids are in bed.

When ASUS announced a collaboration with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS, the nerds in the room (myself included) sat up a little straighter. This isn’t just a sticker job. The ROG Flow Z13-KJP is a ground-up reimagining of the gaming tablet, blending Hideo Kojima’s visionary “Ludens” aesthetic with some of the most aptly chosen silicon I’ve ever tested.

ASUS ROG Flow Z13-KJP Gaming Tablet review

Pros 👍 Cons 👎
  • Exquisite build: A CNC aluminum and carbon fiber combo is a masterclass in design.
  • Memory: 128GB of unified RAM future-proofs it for AI and heavy creation.
  • Kojima aesthetic: The “Ludens” theme is executed with genuine care, not just logos.
  • Portability: Despite the weight, it still fits into small bags where a laptop wouldn’t.
  • Weight: It’s “chonky” for a tablet, impacting its use as a handheld device.
  • Price: You are definitely paying for the “Special Edition” status.
  • Practicality: The AC adapter doesn’t fit in the case with the tablet.

If you’re like me, you might be asking yourself exactly what ‘Ludens’ means. From ASUS & Kojima Productions: “The collaboration combines the spirit of the ROG motto For Those Who Dare with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS’ vision From Sapiens to Ludens.” Ludens are the ones who experiment, mod, create and challenge what games — and gaming hardware — can be.

ASUS has always been a brand for modders and tinkerers — those who dare to whip out their torx set, crack open the chassis, and see what kind of personal flare (and power) they can add to their machines.

The Flow Z13-KJP feels like Hideo Kojima and Designer Yoji Shinkawa were unleashed on this form-factor; one which lends itself well to the futuristic adventurer, and produced the crown jewel of custom mods. They were able to hand-pick components and materials to make this the ultimate expression of sci-fi futurist tech.

Unboxing the ROG Flow Z13-KJP

The first impression of the Flow Z13-KJP isn’t even made by the device. The white and rose gold-coloured case housing the tablet feels like it’s been sent down a space elevator from low earth orbit. There’s an undeniable sense of gravitas and exclusivity popping open the clasps and lifting the lid to reveal the Z13 cradled in black foam within.

Shimmering back at you is the matte lustre of a CNC-milled chassis and a real carbon fiber backplate. Clad in “Decennium Gold” and desert sand tones, it looks less like a consumer electronic and more like a piece of salvaged tech from a Kojima cinematic.

Durable construction

It is undeniably well-built. The engineering here is top-tier, but that quality comes with a literal weight. Though light for a gaming rig at 1.72 Kg, it’s thick and heavy for a tablet — you won’t be holding this one-handed for long. It’s far more portable than a typical gaming laptop too, it occupies a middle ground that might surprise those expecting iPad or Surface Pro levels of daintiness.

The kickstand and removable keyboard are great for keeping the footprint small, and both are very sturdy and well built. Using the Z13-KJP on your lap if you’re in bed or on the couch is not as stable as a laptop though.

That being said, unlike a laptop, the guts that produce heat are all stored behind the screen, so they aren’t on your lap, which means you don’t get the hot leg/crotch situation when you’re pushing the fans and vapour chamber to the max.

Unique design details

What makes this limited-edition tablet stand out isn’t just the shell; it’s the commitment to the theme:

  • Bespoke UI: A custom Armoury Crate theme and unique startup animations make it feel like you’re booting into a private terminal.
  • Themed accessories: Even the charger and the included carrying case have been designed with the Kojima aesthetic in mind. It’s a cohesive experience from the moment you unbox it. It’s unfortunate though that the case only holds the device. No extra room for the charger and cable.

Is this laptop powerful enough?

Under the hood, ASUS has swapped out traditional mobile chips for the AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395. This is where things get truly interesting for tech enthusiasts.

The 128GB of unified memory is the star of the show. Because the system can dynamically allocate up to 96GB to VRAM, this tablet can handle textures and AI workloads that would make a dedicated desktop GPU sweat. Whether you’re rendering 4K video or running local LLMs like DeepSeek, this device has a ceiling that is kilometers above other 13-inch devices.

Even Armoury Crate has been touched by the Ludens theme, and it’s the toolbox where you can tweak the allocation of VRAM. You can select from a dropdown of preset options from 0.5 GB up to 96 GB, or you can select ‘Recommended’ which will dynamically choose the amount of shared memory allocated to the GPU depending on the needs of the application you’re running.

ASUS does note in their documentation that this may not work exactly right in all situations, and some applications may throw an error that you don’t have the min specs required. Changing this setting does require a restart, so if you’re going to run something serious, best to crank it to 96.

When I ran the 3DMark Steel Nomad Light benchmark on battery power (silent mode) with 96GB of the unified RAM allocated to the GPU I hit a score of 4719, with an FPS of 34.96. When plugged in and in performance mode, the same test hit a score of 8537 (average of those running the benchmark is 9797) at an FPS of 63.24. So having the AC power plugged in makes a massive difference. When manually switching to Turbo mode with the AC plugged in things definitely got a little louder, though not unreasonably so, and the scores ended up at 9770 with an FPS of 72.38. Altogether a pretty good result for a gaming tablet.

How long is the battery life?

The Z13-KJP is equipped with a 70Whr battery that delivers five to nine hours of real-world use for productivity and media consumption. I reliably got seven or eight hours out of it with regular use web browsing, writing and watching videos, not really paying much attention to settings.

However, the reality of high-performance gaming on a tablet is that those powerful components demand a lot of energy; under heavy gaming loads, you can expect the Z13-KJP to last between one and two hours. If you want to stretch the battery closer to the 10-hour mark:

  • Choose silent mode: Changing the Operating Mode to Silent using Armoury Crate is the most effective way to preserve power during light tasks. The only other option is Performance mode as Turbo is only available when plugged in.
  • Adjust refresh rate: Scaling the screen back from its peak at 180Hz to a standard 60Hz offers improvements in battery life.
  • Manage aesthetics: Turning off the RGB lighting and reducing screen brightness can provide that extra bit of overhead needed to get through a long flight or a series of meetings.

Fortunately, when you do need charge, the included 200W adapter is fast and efficient. Or, if you’ve got a 100W USB-C charger available, you can go from dead to 50 per cent in about 30 minutes. It’s an added bonus of those 40Gbps USB 4 ports that I can see being helpful if you’re mobile and need a quick top-up.

Gaming & content creation

The ROG Nebula Display looks pretty stunning. With Pantone validation and 100 per cent DCI-P3 coverage, colors are punchy and accurate. Playing Death Stranding 2: On the Beach (which comes bundled) is a treat; the 180Hz refresh rate ensures movement is fluid, and the 500 nits of brightness make it usable even if I’m sitting near a bright window at a café.

While the performance is staggering for a tablet, the “cost-to-experience” ratio is a bit of a curveball. You are paying a real premium for the form factor and the collaboration. A traditional gaming laptop might give you more raw frames-per-second for the dollar, but it won’t give you the ability to rip the keyboard off and use a 16-core workstation as a digital sketchbook.

Final verdict: Who should consider the ASUS ROG Flow Z13-KJP?

The ASUS ROG Flow Z13-KJP is a bold experiment that actually works. It’s a love letter to Kojima fans, but it’s also a serious tool for creators who need massive VRAM on the go. If you value engineering that pushes boundaries and you’re willing to trade a bit of “thinness” for raw, unadulterated power, this is the most unique device you can buy in 2026, especially if you’re a gamer, or someone who gets creative and likes to experiment with onboard AI.
