Where was ‘The Rip’ filmed? Behind the locations of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s new action flick, Canada Reviews

16 January 20263 Mins Read

Good Will Hunting duo and life-long buds Ben Affleck and Matt Damon have reunited for a new Netflix’s action thriller. The Rip has the pair playing Miami cops who chance upon millions in cash in a rundown warehouse.

With equal doses of psychological conflict and adrenaline-fuelled shootouts, it’s Netflix’s first big-budget movie of the year. For a thriller that unfolds over one chaotic night in the Magic City, the Joe Carnahan film joins the Miami cop canon alongside Miami Vice and Bad Boys.

But where in Miami was The Rip filmed? Or was it even filmed in Miami? Here’s your quick guide to all the locations in the Netflix original film.

Where was The Rip filmed?

Despite its Miami setting, filming for The Rip took place mostly in New Jersey and LA. It’s not a movie stacked with touristy vistas of sunny beaches and neon-lit clubs. Instead, the story is grounded in a grimmer version of the city, one harbouring cops and DEA agents of both the righteous and the crooked kind.

Hudson County, New Jersey

New Jersey’s smallest borough Hudson County appears prominently in The Rip with several prominent cities dressed up to double as Miami. Back in late 2024 when filming was in progress, the cast were spotted filming in parts of Bayonne, a New Jersey city that previously hosted productions like Ron Howard’s Oscar-winner A Beautiful Mind and the Mickey Rourke drama The Wrestler. Filming also took place north of Hudson County in the borough of Moonachie.

Damon additionally filmed some scenes in Hoboken, a riverside location used in Marlon Brando classic On the Waterfront and more recently, Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown.

Los Angeles

The neighbourhoods and streets of Los Angeles were also redressed as Miami locations. Some of the film’s drone shots were also filmed in the Californian city to capture the sprawling landscapes surrounding our late-shift heroes and the many explosions and shootouts that they’re caught up in.

Miami, Florida

While principal photography didn’t happen at Miami, the Florida city was used for a few establishing shots and exteriors. Look out for Miami landmarks like Kaseya Centre, Port of Miami and One Thousand Museum.

Who stars in The Rip?

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are veteran cops worn down by financial pressure and personal tragedies. After joining forces in films like Good Will Hunting, Dogma, The Last Duel and Air, the Bostonians continue their bromance with a movie that reunites Affleck with his Smokin’ Aces director Joe Carnahan.

The ensemble also includes Teyana Taylor (One Battle After Another), Steven Yeun (Minari), and Catalina Sandino Moreno (Ballerina) as the junior cops assigned under our two protagonists.

Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights) plays a seasoned DEA veteran, while martial artist Scott Adkins (John Wick: Chapter 4) plays Affleck’s brother, a hot-headed FBI agent. Sasha Calle (The Flash) rounds off the cast as a civilian embroiled in this game of ‘cops and cartels’ because the multi-million dollar stash just so happens to hide in her house.

Where can I watch the movie?

The Rip is streaming on Netflix now.

Is there a trailer?
