Xbox Is Putting a Time Limit on Cloud Gaming

4 September 20263 Mins Read

Xbox is watering down Game Pass benefits to cut costs. Starting in November, cloud gaming will receive a major overhaul, and one of the most notable changes is the time limit that will be assigned to each Xbox account depending on its Game Pass subscription tier. Cloud gaming has been one of the subscription’s selling points, so it is a shame to see it being downgraded.

In 2023, Xbox projections suggested that cloud gaming would be Game Pass’s main selling point. However, these projections also showed that there would be nearly 80 million Game Pass subscribers by 2026, and this was not the case. Considering that cloud gaming is nowhere near as popular as Xbox wanted it to be, it will be the target of Xbox’s next cost-cutting operation.

Game Pass Ultimate subscribers only get 15 hours of ‘free’ cloud playtime a month

Starting in November, Xbox is implementing monthly time limits on cloud gaming across all Game Pass tiers. Game Pass Ultimate subscribers will get up to 15 hours of cloud gaming, Premium subscribers will receive 10 hours, and Essential subscribers will get a mere five hours. According to Xbox, these changes supposedly stem from the costs of rising cloud playtime and a larger cloud gaming player base. But oddly enough, Xbox reassures players that this change will only affect 4% of subscribers.

On the bright side, players will be able to access Xbox’s cloud gaming services without subscribing to Game Pass. Playtime will be available for purchase on the Xbox Store. It appears that bought hours will be cumulative, but it is unknown if those granted to subscribers on a monthly basis will carry over time and remain available when their subscription runs out.

Cloud playtime restrictions have just been announced, and more details will be revealed in the future. Then, we will be able to evaluate how impactful this will be and whether paid cloud hours will be too expensive for regular users to continue using the service. In November, Xbox will share information about cloud gaming’s cost per hour, additional eligible games, and price differences across regions.

Polygon’s Aris Notis predicted in July that Game Pass’s price decrease would most likely mean that its best features would be diluted due to CEO Asha Sharma’s Xbox reset. As Notis wrote: “The likely downstream effect of Xbox’s restructure on Game Pass is starting to shape up like everything else has in 2026: You get less for more”. This happened with day-one releases, which were previously available across all tiers but eventually became exclusive to Game Pass’s highest tier. Now, it’s happening with cloud gaming.

For the same price, fans will have access to fewer hours on the cloud, and if they wish to get more, they will have to pay up. Xbox promises that cloud gaming is being put behind a paywall so it can continue to improve its reliability and performance. So, hopefully, players can expect a better experience when they start paying for their extra playtime in the cloud.
