You can try river surfing in Calgary at this guided summer experience

28 May 20263 Mins Read

River surfing in Calgary sounds fake until you actually see someone doing it on the Bow River. And if you’ve ever wanted the chance to try it out for yourself, this is your chance. This summer, the Alberta River Surfing Association is offering lessons for beginners who want to try out river surfing for the first time.

What river surfing actually looks like

If you’re picturing ocean waves, this is a little different. Calgary’s river surfing scene is built around controlled rapids, especially around Harvie Passage, where the current creates a standing wave you can actually surf on.

It’s definitely one of those things that looks a little surprising the first time you see it. Throughout the passage, you’ll see people in wetsuits balancing on boards in the middle of the water while everyone walks by.

And if you’ve ever seen this in person and wanted to try it for yourself, the Alberta River Surfing Association is offering beginner lessons this summer!

According to organizers, during the three-hour lesson, you’ll start on land and learn the basics, including safety, how water moves, and how to read the river. And by the end of it, you’ll learn all the basics of balancing on the board, and probably have a few wipeouts too.

Plan your next adventure

The lessons are built for beginners, so you don’t need any surfing experience to sign up. It is important to note that you need to be a confident swimmer to participate, since the currents can be intense at times.

Boards and wetsuits are included in the experience, making it easy to try it out without spending a fortune on gear.

To attend, you must have an Alberta River Surfing Association membership, which you can purchase online. The membership is $3 per month and goes back into supporting the local surfing community and helping to keep the sport accessible in the city.

According to organizers, the beginner session costs $250 and runs every second weekend throughout the summer, starting on July 11, 2026, and bookings are now open. Each lesson lasts around three hours, and gives you plenty of time to learn new skills and get comfortable on the water.

River surfing might not be the most obvious summer activity in Calgary, but that’s exactly why it’s worth giving it a try. It’s quickly becoming a growing sport in the local community and allows Calgarians to replicate that ocean feel without having to travel to the coast.

When: Lessons starting on July 11, 2026 and running until Sept. 5, 2026
Time: 9 a.m. to noon
Where: Pearce Estate Park – 1440 17A St. SE, Calgary, Alta.
Cost: $250
