17 Years Later, Johnny Depp’s Overlooked Action Crime Thriller Is Officially Free on YouTube

Hollywood has spent decades returning to the Prohibition and Great Depression eras, a time period when gangsters became folk heroes, law enforcement reinvented itself, and the American underworld was undergoing a violent transformation. We’ve seen Brian De Palma capture the larger-than-life pursuit of Al Capone in The Untouchables, while Sam Mendes explored the tragic weight of family ties in Road to Perdition. John Lee Hancock flipped the script to highlight the gritty lawmen hunting Bonnie and Clyde in The Highwaymen. While all of these movies are classics in their own right, none have Johnny Depp as the lead.

Based on Bryan Burrough’s nonfiction book of the same name, Michael Mann’s Public Enemies puts Depp in the shoes of John Dillinger, one of the most prolific bank robbers in American history, set during his final few months of thieving in 1934. As he wreaks havoc across the Midwest, Dillenger attempts to stay one step ahead of Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale), a ruthless federal agent tasked with finally bringing him justice. With a proven track record of bringing crime epics to life, from Miami Vice to Heat, Mann captures a transformative moment when the relationship between criminals, the public, and the authorities was rapidly shifting. Dillinger became a symbol of defiance during the Great Depression, when banks were the furthest thing from beloved institutions, while the newly empowered FBI was working to establish itself as a formidable national force. The film’s historical scope is narrower than Burrough’s sprawling account of America’s crime wave, but that focus gives Mann room to explore the mythology surrounding one particularly charismatic outlaw.

Public Enemies features a stacked ensemble, including names like Giovanni Ribisi, Carey Mulligan, Stephen Dorff, Jason Clarke, and even an early-career appearance from Channing Tatum as Pretty Boy Floyd. Still, Depp delivers a performance that remains a standout in his filmography. Best known for characters who wear their eccentricities on their sleeves, Depp takes a comparatively restrained approach to Dillinger. There’s a cool confidence to the way he carries himself, whether he’s casually walking into a bank or charming Billie Frechette (Marion Cotillard), the woman who becomes his partner and lover. He doesn’t need to turn Dillinger into a larger-than-life cartoon to make him compelling; instead, Depp plays him as a man who fully understands the power of his own legend. He knows that a little public showmanship can be just as potent as a fast getaway, balancing an easy charisma against the lingering threat of violence that sustains his reputation.

Pitted directly against Depp’s outlaw is Bale, who delivers a stoic counterweight as FBI Special Agent Melvin Purvis. Bale excels at showing the emotional toll of the job, quietly conveying how deeply Purvis is affected by the loss of the men under his command without ever breaking his razor-sharp focus. Two scenes in particular showcase this quiet weight: first, when Purvis stands over the body of Tatum’s Pretty Boy Floyd and solemnly bows his head, acknowledging the gravity of the kill; and later, in a painful moment as he stands over a wounded fellow officer, Agent Barton, mourning the cost of the job. These beats elevate Purvis beyond a typical hard-nosed lawman, portraying him as a relentless professional driven by duty, even as he is visibly haunted by the violence surrounding him.

Mann’s filmmaking is just as essential to the movie’s appeal. The director has spent much of his career examining professionals who become consumed by their chosen pursuits, from the criminals in Thief and Heat to the law enforcers in Manhunter and Miami Vice. Dillinger fits neatly into that tradition as a man defined by his work, with little interest in imagining a life beyond the next job, even as the world closes in around him. Mann’s decision to shoot much of Public Enemies with digital cameras gives the period setting an almost documentary-like texture. Rather than presenting the 1930s as a romanticized past, the film makes its streets, hideouts, and violent confrontations feel startlingly present. Its gunfights are especially effective, with the crack of automatic weapons cutting through the quiet before everything descends into chaos.

Public Enemies may not have the operatic sweep of The Untouchables or the hard-boiled elegance of Miller’s Crossing, but it offers something distinct in its grounded look at how American culture builds and destroys its outlaws. Free to watch on YouTube, it remains a rewarding revisit, especially for gamers looking for a compelling crime story ahead of the release of Grand Theft Auto 6, which continues the tradition of turning dangerous criminals into pop-culture icons.
