1971 Classic Ballad, Named No. 1 Hit Song, Became a Soft Rock Anthem

In 1971, James Taylor scored his first and only No. 1 hit with a song that had already begun life as a Carole King composition.

“You’ve Got a Friend” appeared on King’s landmark album Tapestry before Taylor recorded his own version for Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon. Released as a single later that year, Taylor’s rendition climbed to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming one of the defining soft rock ballads of the decade.

The song was born out of one of popular music’s most celebrated creative friendships.

Taylor and King first met while touring together, and it was during a run of shows in Los Angeles that Taylor heard the song for the first time during King’s first-ever performance of the would-be hit.

“I was sure I knew the song already because it was such a classic immediately,” Taylor said during an appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. “I literally ran to find my guitar so I could play it. Well, a couple of weeks later we were in the recording studio and we had already recorded tracks for two of my songs on the album, on MudSlide Slim. We had a couple of hours left and that’s typically the time when someone will think of a cover and that’s how we ended up doing ‘How Sweet It is,’ ‘Handyman’ and ‘Up On the Roof.’ It’s just a spur of the moment, drop of a hat, we would do a quick arrangement and boom.”

In that moment, only one song was on Taylor’s mind.

“I had learned that song of Carole’s and said, ‘Let’s play that song of Carole’s!’ She’s in the studio making Tapestry,” Taylor told Colbert. “And she’s recording. Of course she wants to record that song, it’s the best song written by a human being. So, I blithely go and record the song and we really liked the way it sounded, so I had to go to Carole and say, ‘I sort of cut your hit.’ She said, ‘That’s great.’ It was typically generous.”

King played piano on Taylor’s version and also sang backing vocals alongside Joni Mitchell, creating one of the era’s most memorable collaborations. Although the arrangements are similar, Taylor’s interpretation leans further into the gentle acoustic sound that helped define the emerging soft rock movement.

Much to Taylor’s surprise, King later revealed that his own song was the inspiration behind the now-iconic tune.

“She said, ‘You know that line in ‘Fire and Rain,’ ‘I’ve seen lonely times when I couldn’t find a friend? That’s what inspired that song, ‘You’ve Got a Friend.”” Taylor told Colbert. “She said, I heard those lines and I was thinking to myself, ‘I’m going to tell him he does have a friend.'”

Listeners immediately embraced it.

Released in the summer of 1971, “You’ve Got a Friend” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and also topped the Adult Contemporary chart. The recording earned Taylor the Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, while King received the Grammy for Song of the Year as its songwriter, making it one of the rare songs to honor both the performer and composer in the same year.

Its enduring appeal lies in its universal message.

Built around simple acoustic guitar, piano and understated harmonies, the song offers unconditional support during life’s most difficult moments. Rather than focusing on romance, it celebrates friendship and compassion, themes that have allowed it to resonate across generations.

More than five decades later, “You’ve Got a Friend” remains one of James Taylor’s signature recordings and a cornerstone of the singer-songwriter era. It continues to receive regular airplay on classic hits and soft rock radio while serving as a reminder of the extraordinary musical partnership between Taylor and Carole King.
