1972 Rock Song, Still a Popular Hit After 54 Years, Was Written in a France Basement

12 September 20263 Mins Read

The Rolling Stones released their 1972 hit song, “Tumbling Dice,” which still stands as one of the band’s most celebrated tracks and continues to resonate with audiences decades later.

Featured as the lead single from their acclaimed album Exile on Main St., the song was included in Rolling Stone’s 500 Best Songs of All Time, where it claimed the No. 86 spot.

The publication highlighted frontman Mick Jagger’s powerful vocals, which suited the track’s slow and relaxed rhythm, giving “Tumbling Dice” its raw mood, accompanied by Mick Taylor’s “slinky slide-guitar parts.”

Amid the golden era of the 1970s, “Tumbling Dice” was a commercial success.

Besides being a radio staple at the time, the song peaked at No. 7 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and spent 10 weeks on the chart, while it reached No. 5 on the UK Singles Chart.

The song began as an earlier version titled “Good Time Woman” before evolving into “Tumbling Dice” during The Rolling Stones’ recording session in the musty basement of Villa Nellcote in France, a mansion rented by lead guitarist Keith Richards.

“We worked on that for a couple of weeks at least, just the basic track,”  legendary British sound engineer and record producer Andy Johns recalled, as cited by uDiscover Music. “I know we had a hundred reels of tape on the basic track.”

According to Jagger, the earlier version had different lyrics, but he wasn’t satisfied with them and eventually developed the song into “Tumbling Dice.”

“It started out with a great riff from Keith and we had it down as a completed song called Good Time Women,’” he shared in a 2010 interview with The Sun, as cited by Songfacts, adding “That take is one of the bonus tracks on the new Exile package; it was quite fast and sounded great but I wasn’t happy with the lyrics.”

The frontman also mentioned the participation of their housekeeper, who helped him understand the terminology he could incorporate into the song.

“Later, I got the title in my head, ‘call me the tumbling dice,’ so I had the theme for it,” Jagger mentioned. “I didn’t know anything about dice playing, but I knew lots of jargon used by dice players. I’d heard gamblers in casinos shouting it out. I asked my housekeeper if she played dice. She did and she told me these terms. That was the inspiration.”

From its early incarnation as “Good Time Women” to becoming one of The Rolling Stones’ defining hits, “Tumbling Dice” emerged from a creative period that helped shape the band’s musical legacy.
