1975 Pink Floyd Hit, Written in 60 Minutes, Ranked Among 'Best Rock Songs' of All Time

Every legendary rock band has a turning point.

For Pink Floyd, the song “Wish You Were Here” was exactly that. The timeless ballad, named one of the best rock songs of all time by Collider, captured the emptiness and disillusionment that world-wide fame had cast over the band, following the massive success of their previous album, Dark Side of the Moon, and spoke to the epic sense of loss that they felt over the departure of original member, Syd Barrett. 

“I don’t think we started recording on ‘I Wish You Were Here’ with the idea that it was related to Syd,” drummer Nick Mason told NPR. “I think it was a much more general absence. And then there was this remarkable visitation from Syd. I hadn’t seen him, I would say, for five years, something like that.” 

Startled out of their creative trance by this seeming stranger, the band didn’t recognize the very person they were honoring so painstakingly through song. He was much changed and his visit was not anticipated. It took the band a while to recognize their estranged friend who had left Pink Floyd following a mental breakdown a few years prior.

Despite its somber and wistful lyrics, “Wish You Were Here” became the most accessible and instantly popular track on the album due to its bare acoustic intro, its song structure and the intimate, aching vocals of David Gilmour. The universal themes of loss, guilt, and grief resonated with listeners world-wide. Five decades later, legions of devoted fans, new and old, are still singing along.

“Wish You Were Here” was born of an undeniable chemistry between lead men Roger Waters and David Gilmour. 

“I remember the moment of creating it quite often,” Gilmour told Louder. “I played that in the control room of number 3 studio at Abbey Road. It was just something I’d been strumming at home, and Roger immediately said, ‘What’s that? What’s that?’ and we had to immediately get on with that and work it up.” 

That 12-string acoustic riff that Waters heard and keyed in on was the beginning of “Wish You Were Here.”

“Some [riffs] have a little bit of magic to them, and some don’t,” Gilmour added. “And the ones that do have that bit of magic to them, it’s obvious to people around.” 

The remainder of the song was written by Gilmour and Waters in the hour that followed. And what happened next was history.

Wish You Were Here, the parent album, was released on September 12, 1975. Despite receiving mixed reviews, the album climbed to No.1 on the Billboard 200 in the US and reached No.1 on the UK Official Albums Chart in September 1975. Fifty years later, it was named the U.K.’s Christmas No. 1 LP of 2025 in Billboard. To date it has sold around 20 million copies worldwide. 

The creation of the album Wish You Were Here marked the beginning of the creative and personal divide between songwriters Gilmour and Waters that would plague them well into the future, with the following two albums, Animals, and The Wall, being mostly conceptualized and written by Waters. Despite this now long-standing division, both men speak positively and respectfully about the co-creation of the title song.

Over fifty years later, “Wish You Were Here” has been covered by countless artists, from Wyclef Jean to Miley Cyrus. The intimate song that sprung from two lost souls in England has become one of the legendary band’s most beloved tracks and remains one of best rock songs of all time.
