Eric Clapton’s 1992 hit “Tears in Heaven” was more than a celebrated classic, earning widespread recognition as one of the 100 Greatest Soft Rock Songs while carrying deep personal meaning for the singer.
The melodic pop-rock single was among the enduring soft rock classics featured on Amazon Music’s curated playlist, where it ranked No. 5, while Toto’s “Africa” claimed the No. 1 spot.
Moreover, its decades-long place in music history also earned “Tears in Heaven” a spot at No. 26 on Ultimate Classic Rock’s Top 40 Soft Rock Songs.
Before captivating listeners with its timeless appeal, this Clapton song was written for the soundtrack of the 1991 crime movie Rush.
Along with legendary, Oscar-winning American lyricist Will Jennings, who co-wrote the track, “Tears in Heaven” became Clapton’s emotional outlet as he grieved the tragic death of his young son, Conor.

“Eric and I were engaged to write a song for a movie called Rush,” Jennings told Songfacts. “We wrote a song called ‘Help Me Up’ for the end of the movie… then Eric saw another place in the movie for a song and he said to me, ‘I want to write a song about my boy.’”
The passing of his four-year-old son, Conor, who died after falling from a high-rise apartment window, inspired the deeply personal song.
“Eric had the first verse of the song written, which, to me, is all the song, but he wanted me to write the rest of the verse lines and the release (‘Time can bring you down, time can bend your knees…’), even though I told him that it was so personal he should write everything himself,” the lyricist continued. Adding, “He told me that he had admired the work I did with Steve Winwood and finally there was nothing else but to do as he requested, despite the sensitivity of the subject. This is a song so personal and so sad that it is unique in my experience of writing songs.”
At the time, the single, which was originally featured on the soundtrack to the film Rush in 1991, with the soundtrack album released in January 1992.
The song later gained wider recognition after Clapton performed it on MTV Unplugged.
He was able to turn the deeply personal tribute into one of his most recognized recordings and held the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart for 13 weeks while reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Adding to its list of accolades, “Tears in Heaven” earned Clapton and Jennings three major wins at the 35th Annual Grammy Awards. These included Song of the Year, Record of the Year and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
