Liu Cixin’s The Three-Body Problem, first published in China in 2008, has grown from a Chinese science-fiction novel into a worldwide literary success, with its story reaching millions of readers and later becoming a major Netflix television adaptation.
The book was first published in English in November 2014. Its international release helped introduce Liu’s work to a much wider audience, and in 2015, The Three-Body Problem won the Hugo Award for Best Novel. The award became an important moment for Chinese science fiction and helped bring the novel to readers far beyond China.
More than a decade after its international debut, the book continues to make an impact around the world. A report presented at the “Cosmic Echoes – The Three-Body Problem’s Overseas 10-Year Impact Release Conference” said global sales had exceeded 30 million copies. Another figure cited at the event said the novel had sold 6.5 million copies in 42 languages, per China Daily.
The international success of The Three-Body Problem was celebrated on Aug. 30 during the 15th China International Digital Publishing Expo in Zhengzhou, Henan province. More than 400 people attended, including Liu Cixin, science-fiction writers, scholars, publishers and readers from different countries.
The novel follows humanity’s first contact with an alien civilization, but its story begins with events during China’s Cultural Revolution.
Astrophysicist Ye Wenjie is sent to a remote research facility after witnessing the death of her father. At the facility, she becomes involved in a secret project searching for life beyond Earth.
Years later, strange events begin affecting scientists. Researchers die under mysterious circumstances, while nanotechnology researcher Wang Miao encounters an unexplained countdown. The story then expands into a larger mystery involving extraterrestrial communication, advanced technology and the possible future of humanity.
One of the book’s main ideas comes from a real physics problem known as the “three-body problem.” It deals with how three celestial bodies move under gravity. Their movements can become extremely difficult to predict.
In Liu’s story, this scientific idea is connected to the Trisolarans, an alien civilization whose planet orbits three suns. The unstable system creates dangerous changes in climate and gravity, giving the aliens a reason to search for a new home.
The novel combines hard science fiction with history and questions about humanity. Its focus on science, alien life and human choices helped it stand out among major works in the genre.
Collider included The Three-Body Problem in a list of seven sci-fi books it described as “10/10 masterpieces.” It highlighted the novel’s combination of hard science fiction, history and extraterrestrial mystery.
The story reached an even larger entertainment audience when Netflix released 3 Body Problem, an eight-episode television adaptation, on March 21, 2024.
The series was created by David Benioff, D. B. Weiss and Alexander Woo. It is based on Liu Cixin’s Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy, with the first novel providing the series title.
Unlike the original novel’s China-centered setting, the Netflix version uses an international cast of characters and locations, with much of the story taking place in the United Kingdom. The main characters are largely scientists who become involved in a mystery connected to an extraterrestrial civilization.
The Netflix adaptation received positive reviews for its cast, ambition and production values. It also earned six Primetime Emmy Award nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series.
The series was renewed for a second and third season in May 2024. The television adaptation also brought several of the book’s biggest ideas to the screen. The mysterious virtual reality game, the countdown seen by scientists and the growing threat from the San-Ti all became major parts of the first season.
The event also featured a video tribute from science-fiction figures around the world. American science-fiction author David Brin said the novel had transformed science fiction not only in China but around the world.
The book’s journey from a 2008 Chinese publication to an award-winning international bestseller and a Netflix science-fiction series shows how far its story has traveled.
