Mark Wahlberg has spent most of his career bouncing between two very different versions of himself.
On one side, there’s the hard-edged action star from movies like Shooter, Lone Survivor, Deepwater Horizon, and the Transformers franchise — the guy you call when something needs to explode, someone needs to be rescued, or a military operation has gone very wrong. Then there’s the looser, funnier Wahlberg from The Other Guys, Ted, and Daddy’s Home, where that same tough-guy persona becomes part of the joke.
One movie from a few years ago sits almost perfectly in the middle of those two modes, combining suburban family comedy with car chases and assassins.
That movie is The Family Plan, the 2023 Apple TV action-comedy starring Wahlberg and Michelle Monaghan. Nearly three years after its original release, the movie is back near the top of Apple TV’s charts, currently sitting at No. 4, according to FlixPatrol.
What is The Family Plan about?
Wahlberg stars as Dan Morgan, a mild-mannered car salesman living a quiet suburban life with his wife Jessica, played by Michelle Monaghan, and their three kids. He also used to be an elite government assassin.
When enemies from his past finally track him down, Dan piles his unsuspecting family into a minivan and heads toward Las Vegas under the guise of an impromptu road trip. Along the way, he has to keep everyone alive while hiding the fact that he knows how to handle himself in dangerous situations.
Critics weren’t particularly impressed when The Family Plan first arrived. The movie currently holds a 27% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, where most reviews criticized it for leaning too heavily on familiar action-comedy formulas.
That didn’t stop Apple from moving forward with more. The Family Plan 2 arrived in 2025, reuniting Wahlberg and Monaghan for another round of family chaos and action, this time with the Morgans getting pulled into trouble during a European vacation.
