5 horror movies filmed in Alberta to watch this Halloween

17 October 20263 Mins Read

As Halloween approaches, there’s no better time to queue up a few scary movies, and you might be surprised to learn how many were filmed right here in Alberta.

From Calgary’s historic buildings to the forests and small towns scattered across the province, Alberta has provided the backdrop for some terrifying on-screen moments.

So, if you’re looking for something spooky to add to your movie marathon this October, these five films are worth adding to your watchlist.

Prey (2022)

Set nearly 300 years before the original Predator, Prey follows Naru, a young Comanche warrior determined to prove herself as a hunter. Her plans take a terrifying turn when she discovers that her prey is something far more dangerous than she expected.

The 2022 film was shot around Calgary and the Stoney Nakoda Nation, along with Moose Mountain and the Elbow River.

Prank Night (2026)

Prank Night is a film about a young woman seeking payback against a group of people who attacked her family. The movie stars Katharine Isabelle and Katherine Evans, and was filmed in Calgary.

And there’s more on the way! According to ACTRA Alberta, the sequel, Prank Night 2: Repetition, was filmed in Calgary and surrounding areas from Sept. 14 to Oct. 9, 2026. So keep an eye out for the next instalment.

Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II (1987)

A prom queen who died in a fire decades earlier returns to haunt a high school student in this supernatural slasher from the 1980s. Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II was filmed in Edmonton, with several local schools appearing on screen, including Westmount Junior High School and Highlands Junior High School. West Edmonton Mall is also listed as a filming location, so keep an eye out for familiar spots while watching.

Skinamarink (2022)

Imagine waking up in the middle of the night to find your dad missing, the doors and windows gone, and something strange lurking in the darkness. That’s the premise of Skinamarink, an experimental horror film that uses dark hallways and unsettling camera angles to create a sense of dread.

The film was shot inside director Kyle Edward Ball’s childhood home in Edmonton and was released in 2022.

Dark Nature (2022)

Calgary filmmaker Berkley Brady made her feature directorial debut with Dark Nature, a horror movie filmed in and around the city and in Kananaskis. The story follows Joy, a survivor of an abusive relationship who joins a therapy group for a retreat in the Rocky Mountains. But when the group begins to experience strange events, the weekend becomes a fight to survive.

So, grab some snacks, turn off the lights, and see if you can handle these Alberta horror movies.
