6 free workshops in Edmonton where you can learn a brand new skill

30 October 20263 Mins Read

The Edmonton Reuse Centre has a number of skill-building workshops in the weeks ahead of us that visitors can take part in for free, including dress-altering classes, gift-bag making, and more!

This centre is a facility operated by the City of Edmonton that’s been supporting the circular economy since 2007. According to its website, the Reuse Centre is currently offering reusable items to Edmonton residents free of charge, and accepting item donations on a regular basis (given the items are in good, clean condition, and donated within the hours of operation).

But, as a way to help promote item reuse and reduce waste in the community, the centre also hosts loads of free workshops and events for those in the area. Whether you’re checking out DIY Thursdays or one of the popular swap events, the Reuse Centre is definitely worth a visit.

What kinds of free workshops are being held at the Reuse Centre?

DIY Thursdays are free weekly workshops the centre hosts, featuring local experts who help build skills to reduce waste. According to the centre’s website, past workshops have included things like bike repair, gardening workshops, and sewing.

As of Oct. 30, these are the DIY Thursday workshops coming to the Reuse Centre:

  • Loom Knitting on Nov. 5, 2026
  • Dress Altering on Nov. 12, 2026
  • Reusable T-Shirt Bag on Nov. 19, 2026
  • Plastic Canvas Ornaments on Nov. 26, 2026
    • The Plastic Canvas Ornaments workshop is kid-friendly, open to ages seven and above. However, children must be supervised by an adult.
  • Neural Art Wrapping Paper on Dec. 3, 2026
  • Drawstring Gift Bag on Dec. 10, 2026

Each workshop will be held on its respective day from 6 to 8 p.m., giving visitors around two hours to build skills and help reduce waste in the area.

In addition to these DIY Thursday workshops, the Reuse Centre will also be holding another swap event. These swap events focus on specific types of items, such as books, movies, and toys, and Edmonton residents are welcome to trade up to five items with each other at no charge.

The next swap event is this upcoming Saturday, Nov. 21, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a focus on swapping toys.

If you’re looking for a great way to be eco-friendly this season, you’ll definitely want to take a trip to the Reuse Centre. Whether you’re building new skills, swapping some cool toys, or just finding ways to reduce your waste, it’ll be worth the visit.

When: Wednesday to Saturday
Time: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays; Noon to 6 p.m. on Thursdays
Where: 6835 83rd St. NW, Edmonton, Alta.
