7 cozy coffee shops in Calgary to visit on a chilly day

6 November 20263 Mins Read

Calgary’s colder months are just around the corner, so now’s the perfect time to start scouting cozy coffee shops around the city. And with exam season on the horizon, finding a cafe with a warm atmosphere and a comforting drink can make those study sessions a little more enjoyable.

The city has an ever-growing coffee scene, and there’s no shortage of places to duck into as temperatures drop.

Here are seven cozy spots to check out when the weather gets chilly.

If you find yourself in the neighbourhood of Edgemont, head over to Friends Cafe for homemade soups, sandwiches, baked goods, and an atmosphere that will make you feel right at home.

Where: 45 Edenwold Dr. NW, Calgary, Alta.

Haven House is the kind of cafe that feels like stepping into someone’s cozy home, with vintage decor, comfy seating, and little details that make the space feel personal. While you’re enjoying your coffee, you can also browse their artisan market, which is full of local finds.

Where: 1107 48th Ave. NW, Calgary, Alta.

Fenyk Coffee and Social has two locations in Calgary, both with spacious interiors that make it quite a bit easier to fit seating compared to other coffee shops.

They’re also open until 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday, so if you’re looking for somewhere to squeeze in a late-night study session, this is a great spot to keep in mind.

Where: 5049 Northland Dr. NW, Calgary, Alta.; 10 Canada Olympic Rd. SW, Calgary, Alta.

Tucked into one of the city’s most walkable neighbourhoods, Higher Ground is a longtime Calgary favourite that’s perfect for warming up after a stroll through Kensington.

This is another cafe that stays open quite late, so if you need somewhere to study after the library closes, head over to Higher Ground.

Where: 1126 Kensington Rd. NW, Calgary, Alta.

Congress Coffee is a cafe that brings together coffee, art and live music. The space serves house-roasted coffee, sandwiches, soups and baked goods, but it also transforms into an intimate music venue at night.

Where: 216 36th Ave. NE #1A, Calgary, Alta.

Weeds Cafe has been a neighbourhood favourite since 1994. The cafe is located in Capitol Hill and serves coffee, Montreal-style bagels, fresh-baked muffins, and sandwiches.

Where: 1903 20th Ave. NW, Calgary, Alta.

When Calgary’s skies are looking a little grey, Frida’s Coffee Home brings a burst of colour to the city. Located downtown, this Mexican-inspired cafe features vibrant decor and serves traditional Mexican drinks like Café de Olla and atole, plus sweet treats like conchas and tres leches cake.

Where: 1110 9th Ave. SW, Calgary, Alta.

Which coffee shop are you heading to first?
