‘3 Body Problem’ Season 2 Wraps Production Ahead of Confirmed 2026 Return

Good news for fans of Netflix’s 3 Body Problem: the second season of the hit series has already wrapped filming and will return later this year. 

The cast and crew were hard at work filming from last Summer, and in January, they celebrated the wrap of Season 2 in Budapest, Hungary. Everyone was present, including new faces such as Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon director Miguel Sapochnik, as well as many familiar cast members: Jess Hong, Benedict Wong, Liam Cunningham, Marlo Kelly, Ellie de Lange, and more. Numerous cast members shared videos and photos from their final days of filming, along with a big wrap-up party, which even saw Wong take to the DJ decks. 

As confirmed during What Next? (Next on Netflix), Season 2 will be returning to our screens this year. Given the wrap, we’re not expecting the return until very late in the year – very late. Given the level of VFX and post-production for a show like this, we’re still shocked if it releases in November or December. 

The streamer also teased the return with an ominous logline: “As the alien invasion nears, humanity prepares — on Earth and elsewhere.”

There are at least two directors currently attached to season 2, including the return of Jeremy Podeswa and Game of Thrones alum Miguel Sapochnik joining proceedings.

The third and final season is already renewed, and it’s only a matter of time before they get back to filming. We don’t have a planned production window, but we’d expect the team to take at least several months off. As we covered, seasons 2 and 3 moved to Hungary and are planned to shoot back-to-back, similar to how Avatar: The Last Airbender was renewed for two further seasons and took a several-month break in between. We do not yet know when season 3 will enter production, but we expect an August 2027 wrap. 

There are also several castings yet to be announced and confirmed by Netflix, beyond those previously announced in 2025, with Alfie Allen, David Yip, and Jordan Sunshine among the confirmed new cast members to date.

Elsewhere in 3 Body Problem news, the series had a soft 2025 in terms of viewership, it must be said. The series clocked up 60.1M views in 2024, but fell to just 8.5M in 2025.
