‘Finding Her Edge’ Renewed for Season 2 at Netflix

Netflix’s adaptation of Jennifer Iacopelli’s BookTok sensation sports-romance novel, Finding Her Edge, has secured its future on the ice. After a brilliant start on the platform, Netflix has officially renewed the series for season 2 after its second week. Here’s everything we know so far.

In Finding Her Edge, we follow Adriana Russo (Madelyn Keys), a former competitive skater from a family with an esteemed history in ice skating. When her proud older sister, Elise (Alexandra Beaton), is injured in competition, Adriana decides to put the skates back on. But it’s not just for her own vanity. She needs to earn a sponsorship in order to save her esteemed family’s struggling ice rink. With her former partner — and lover — Freddie (Ollie Atkins) moving on to another partner, she ends up pretending to be in love with her new on-ice partner Brayden (Cale Ambrozic), if only to secure the all-important sponsorship.

Finding Her Edge has one of the spiciest and most emotionally conflicting love triangles you’ll see on television. Whether you’re Team Freddie or Team Brayden, it’ll keep you on the edge of your seat until Adriana ultimately makes her choice in the season finale. Suffice to say, we thoroughly enjoyed the show. “Finding Her Edge is a drama that’ll attract a lot of demographics, and it delivers a pleasing story to each of them,” we wrote in our review. “Whether that’s teenage drama, romance, and sibling rivalries, which will draw in fans of Heartstopper and slightly more adult-focused drama like Ginny & Georgia; or the young adult audience and fans of the novel; or indeed fans of figure skating.”

It’s official: Netflix has renewed Finding Her Edge for a second season.

The renewal comes hot on the heels of impressive performance data. While the show launched at #4 in the weekly top 10, it has since climbed to #3, accumulating over 12 million views since its January 22nd launch. It has also managed to break into the top 10 in 81 countries around the globe.

Jen Klonsky, President and Publisher of Putnam Books for Young Readers, noted that the “Netflix burst” effect has been substantial for the source material, with the paperback selling “500% more copies in just 8 weeks compared to the hardcover.”

Reacting to the renewal, showrunner Jeff Norton said:

“I set out to make a show about love, featuring characters navigating a particularly difficult path in their lives and in their sport. It’s a true gift to be able to work with such a talented cast to extend these characters’ journeys in Season 2, with the support of Netflix and WildBrain.”

Author Jennifer Iacopelli also shared her excitement:

“I am over the moon at the reception Finding Her Edge has received by viewers all over the world. To see my book come to life and watch the world fall in love with my characters has been a dream come true, and now that dream gets to continue with a season two! I can’t wait for audiences to see what’s in store for Adriana, Brayden, Freddie and the rest of Team Russo!”

Stacking up performance against other teen/YA dramas from the past few years, you can see it ranks quite well as of week 2:

What to expect from Finding Her Edge Season 2

The season 1 ending ties up many lingering plot points: Adriana chooses to pursue her relationship with childhood sweetheart Freddie after putting an end to her ‘fake dating’ partnership with Brayden.

However, there is no sequel to Iacopelli’s 2022 novel. Any new material will be wholly original to the Netflix adaptation. Looking into its future, showrunner Jeff Norton has given us a hint of where the story is going.

“I’m certain fans will be delighted as we delve deeper into the two love triangles that anchor our show—the romantic one and the familial one,” Norton said in a press release. “There’s plenty of drama to come both on and off the ice.”

Speaking exclusively to What’s on Netflix prior to the renewal, Norton was already teasing the friction to come. While the Russo rink is technically saved at the end of Season 1, the solution brings its own problems.

“Practically speaking, we tee up at the end of season one that the Russo rink has been acquired by the rival rink, the Voltage Skating Academy,” Norton told us. “There’s an interesting dynamic to play with that as well. At some point, the Russo skaters are going to have to merge with the Voltage skaters. And I think there’s lots of friction to be mined there.”

Norton also revealed that writing for the next chapter began almost immediately after wrapping the first season in Europe. “We finished filming Finding Her Edge in Paris… And I literally started writing more on the plane ride home back in June,” he said. “I think for me, it’s really about the emotional lives of the characters and exploring that some of them have got what they want by the end of season two. But the interesting dramatic question is: is it what they need? That’s the element emotionally I want to explore.”

The main cast members have also teased what they hope season 2 entails. Madelyn Keys wants Adriana to grow closer to those around her.  “I want to see her be more engaged in the other people in her lives and realize that not everything is about her sometimes,” she said. “I’d love her to be more of a support for not only her father, but also for the other people in her life.”

As for Ollie Atkins, he wants Freddie’s competitive nature to shine through even further. “I’d like to see his competitive spirit unlocked,” he said. ” I think that, with all of this history that he has in really compacting down his emotions and controlling how he expresses how he feels, I want to see him let loose. I think it would be really, really fun to play with.”

And then there’s Brayden, who ends the series with Riley as his new skating partner. “I thought we ended on a really great note for season 2, God willing,” said star Cale Ambrozic.

The pieces are in place for another instalment of Finding Her Edge.
