What is the plot of Radioactive Emergency?
The series is inspired by the true events of the Cesium-137 accident in the 1980s in Goiânia, Brazil, when an unsecured radiotherapy source was stolen from an abandoned hospital site and disassembled by the thieves, who were hoping to make money from the scrap. After changing hands several times over the course of a couple of weeks, hundreds of people were exposed to the radioactive waste, resulting in fatalities, and over a hundred thousand people were tested for contamination. Several homes were demolished, and topsoil was removed from several sites to combat the radiation. Despite the efforts of authorities, some of the radioactive waste stolen was still unaccounted for, but the impact on Goiânia and the surrounding area was felt for years, and health-related issues related to the incident are ongoing today.
