Some fans wondered whether the new book would continue Williams’ Blood at the Root trilogy. One user replied, “Wait, Book IV? I thought it was gonna be a trilogy! Not that I’m complaining though😊😊😊.”

Williams later clarified in a reply that the new project is unrelated to the trilogy, writing, “Nah, new series.”

Speaking about writing the series, Williams shared his journey on X.

The author explained that his journey to create Blood at the Root began in 2019, “In 2019 I came up with an idea about a Black kid from my hometown going to a magical HBCU.”

The following year, everything changed, “In 2020 where the world was shut down, I filmed a short film while sleeping in my car. When Hollywood told me no, I turned it into a book, and it became a bestseller and was on major TV outlets.”

Williams continued, “Today, I’m officially saying goodbye to Malik Baron. This character has been with me through it all. He’s weathered so many storms, so much judgment and ridicule, but as he always reminds me, he’s apart of something way bigger. I’m gonna miss this knuckle head. But here’s to many more Black stories in fantasy where WE ALL get to be the heroes. #BloodattheRoot”

Ashes at the Alter is available for preorder now, with an expected publication date of September 15, 2026.

The first two books in the trilogy, Blood at the Root and Bones at the Crossroad are available now.
