Mortal Kombat 2 digital release date and 4K Blu-ray confirmed

2 June 20264 Mins Read

Mortal Kombat fans will be able to relive this year’s live-action video game movie sequel in the comfort of their own homes starting in June. New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures announced Tuesday that Mortal Kombat 2 will be available for purchase digitally on June 9, with a physical release of the film coming in July.

After grossing more than $122 million globally since its theatrical release on May 8, Mortal Kombat 2 will become available through Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Fandango at Home, and other digital movie services. On July 28, Mortal Kombat 2 will be available to own on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD. A streaming release date on HBO Max has not been announced.

The physical releases of Mortal Kombat 2 will include a host of special features. Polygon has an exclusive preview of one of those behind-the-scenes extras, which focuses on the film’s stunt work and choreography. Watch for a sneak peek at the actors who portray Johnny Cage, Shao Kahn, Scorpion, and Sindel talking about the physical demands of testing their might in Mortal Kombat.

The full list of bonus features for the physical release of Mortal Kombat 2 is as follows.

Mortal Kombat 2 stars Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, alongside Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Damon Herriman as Quan Chi, with Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han/Noob Saibot, and Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion.

Mortal Kombat 2 movie reviews

The follow-up to 2021’s Mortal Kombat live-action reboot, Mortal Kombat 2 received mostly positive reviews from critics, according to Rotten Tomatoes. Fans seemed to like the film better, praising the action, focus on fan-favorite characters, and grisly, game-accurate Fatalities.

In our review of Mortal Kombat 2, reviewer Jake Kleinman said the sequel “is an extremely forgettable movie.”

He continued, “Calling it a movie is actually pretty generous: It feels more like a series of well-choreographed fight scenes set against meticulously crafted backdrops, then strung together with a plot and dialogue that recreates the experience of watching a video game cutscene. Mortal Kombat 2 is also a full-throated apology for the 2021 movie, in response to fan criticism. (More on that momentarily.) If that’s what the Mortal Kombat fandom is looking for, more power to them. But if you’re expecting any of the hallmarks of quality storytelling, you won’t find them here.”

Will there be a Mortal Kombat 3 movie?

A third Mortal Kombat movie was announced last year by Mortal Kombat 2 screenwriter Jeremy Slater. But that announcement happened well before MK2 actually showed up in movie theaters and suffered lower-than-expected box-office returns. Hopefully, fans will still get the Mortal Kombat 3 promised by Mortal Kombat 2, and we’ll find out exactly what happened to Liu Kang.
