Some songs never go out of style and neither do the music videos that made them famous.
Thirty years after Virtual Insanity became one of the most unforgettable promos of the MTV era, Jamiroquai frontman Jay Kay is stepping back into one of pop culture’s most iconic sets. The Cat in The Hat has recreated the groundbreaking 1996 video as part of a new campaign for Beefeater 0.0, celebrating the song’s 30th anniversary while paying tribute to the practical filmmaking that helped turn the original into an instant classic.
Created by Lucky Generals and directed by Julien & Quentin, the new commercial stays true to the analog ingenuity that made the original video so memorable. Rather than relying on CGI or AI, the production team built nine practical sets to recreate the illusion through moving floors, carefully choreographed camerawork, and physical performances, with Jay Kay once again leading the way himself.
Released in 1996 as the lead single from Jamiroquai’s third studio album, Travelling Without Moving, “Virtual Insanity” became an international hit and earned widespread acclaim for its innovative visual effects. The video famously created the illusion that the room was moving around Jay Kay using practical effects rather than digital trickery, helping it win four MTV Video Music Awards in 1997, including Video of the Year and Best Cinematography.
Fans were quick to celebrate the recreation on social media, with many calling it a fitting tribute to one of the most influential music videos ever made. Others praised the production for honoring the original’s practical effects instead of relying on CGI or AI, while several described it as one of the strongest artist-brand collaborations they’ve seen.
Three decades later, Virtual Insanity continues to prove that some of the most memorable special effects don’t require computers -just clever choreography, practical filmmaking, and Jay Kay’s unmistakable moves.
