You can learn to fly at Alberta’s only flying trapeze club in Calgary

Rocky Mountain Flying Trapeze is giving Calgarians a chance to embrace their inner circus performer with a lesson that takes things to some seriously new heights. Located at Alberta’s only flying trapeze club, this experience lets you climb onto a real trapeze rig, attempt tricks, and find out what it actually feels like to fly.

And don’t worry if your closest connection to the circus is watching one from the audience, because the instructors will guide you through every step before you take your first leap.

What to expect at a Rocky Mountain Flying Trapeze class

According to organizers, Rocky Mountain Flying Trapeze is the first and only club in Alberta dedicated to teaching the sport of flying trapeze. The non-profit club was created to make the sport more accessible in Calgary, and they welcome everyone from complete beginners to experienced performers.

The club offers lessons throughout the summer at its outdoor trapeze rig, located at the Calgary Shrine Centre in the northwest end of the city. During these lessons, you’ll learn the fundamentals of trapeze and progress to more advanced tricks as the session goes on.

But before you’re ready to soar through the air, every beginner has to start with the basics.

According to Rocky Mountain Flying Trapeze, your first lesson will begin with ground school, where instructors will walk you through important safety guidelines, teach you how to hold the trapeze bar, and prepare you for your first leap in the air.

You’ll start by practicing the basics on a low bar before attempting your first trick, the knee hang, where you’ll hook your knees over the bar and learn how to hang upside down like a real circus performer.

And once you’ve mastered the knee hang, the next challenge is attempting a catch. During this trick, a catcher will swing towards you from the other side of the rig and grab your hands mid-air.

While it might sound complicated, you don’t have to memorize the whole thing before stepping onto the platform. Instructors will guide you through each step and provide cues throughout the lesson.

Tickets, timing, and booking details

Rocky Mountain Flying Trapeze lessons run throughout the summer, with classes available until Aug. 31 at its outdoor rig located in northwest Calgary.

Beginner sessions cost $55 per person and run for approximately 90 minutes, giving you plenty of time to learn all the basics and practice your first tricks.

The class sizes are kept small and intimate, with groups limited to eight participants, so that everyone gets plenty of guidance from the instructors.
