This tiny lakeside village sits next to one of B.C.’s smallest provincial parks

29 July 20263 Mins Read

If you’re looking for a hidden gem to add to your Vancouver Island bucket list, we think Shawnigan Lake is a strong contender. Situated in the scenic Cowichan Valley, bordered by Cobble Hill and Mill Bay, the tiny village is the perfect spot to add to a weekend itinerary. Its name was adapted from the Hul’q’umi’num word “Showe’luqun,” and refers to both the pristine lake and the community itself, which has no shortage of opportunities for outdoor adventure.

In addition to being a great paddling spot, the seven-kilometre lake serves as a beautiful picnic spot, as does Shawnigan Wharf Park, which lies in the heart of the village. During the summer months, you can play some beach volleyball here as well, or go for a refreshing dip.

The lake is situated at West Shawnigan Lake Provincial Park, which offers plenty of waterfront access, a dedicated swimming area, and a large grassy lawn, perfect for sprawling out on.

The area is also accessible from the famed Cowichan Valley Trail, making it a prime stop on a hike or bike ride from the Kinsol Trestle, a spectacular, world-famous trestle bridge.

Situated on Shawnigan Lake, Memory Island Park happens to be one of the smallest provincial parks in all of B.C., totalling 0.915 hectares. It’s a day-use-only park that safeguards a number of small mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, plants, and fungi, according to BC Parks.

It’s also one of the only protected park islands found in a major destination lake, making it all the more fascinating to visit for yourself. While there are no designated hiking trails or swimming areas, there are plentiful kayaking and canoeing opportunities here, as well as a day-use picnic area if you need to refuel.

There’s an access point to the park at West Shawnigan Lake Park, though you’ll, of course, have to get there by boat, canoe, or kayak.

By car, Shawnigan Lake is around 45 minutes from Victoria and an hour away from Nanaimo.

While much of the Island is known for its mild, year-round climate, Shawnigan Lake still experiences four distinct seasons, though there’s definitely more rain than snow come wintertime. So if you’re looking for lesser-known destinations to add to your fall or winter travel itinerary, Shawnigan Lake is up there on the list.
