Harry Potter prequel game Hogwarts Legacy was the biggest new release of 2022, selling more than 22 million copies in its first year in the U.S. and outperforming that year’s Call of Duty entry, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Hogwarts Legacy has since gone on to sell more than 40 million copies, so logically, a sequel would be in the works. As of this month, parent company Warner Bros. Discovery made it official: Hogwarts Legacy 2 is coming.
That’s not a big surprise. Warner Bros. executives have said for years that a follow-up to the billion-dollar Hogwarts Legacy was a priority for the company, which has struggled to find hits with notable flops like Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, misfires such as MultiVersus and high-profile game cancellations like Wonder Woman. Execs have also said that the WB Games division would focus its efforts on four key franchises, one of which is Harry Potter.
In a letter to shareholders dated Aug. 6, Warner Bros. said that games are an “important growth lever” for the company, and highlighted its more recent wins. It then confirmed, officially to its investors, that a Hogwarts Legacy sequel is in development.
During the second quarter, we released Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight – the highest rated Lego game ever – and Game of Thrones: Dragonfire, our second mobile game from the Game of Thrones universe. These releases marked the first launches under our refocused strategy centered around four key $1 billion+ franchises with disciplined investment behind fewer, higher conviction titles. We expect Games to more meaningfully contribute to segment profitability going forward as our pipeline expands, including the second installment of Hogwarts Legacy.
Again, not a big surprise to eagle-eyed Harry Potter fans. Back in 2024, WBD CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels said, “Obviously, a successor to ‘Hogwarts Legacy’ is one of the biggest priorities in a couple of years down the road.”
Hogwarts Legacy 2 is a key part of WB Games’ future
In 2025, CEO and president of global streaming and games for Warner Bros. Discovery JB Perrette said that after a “disappointing 2024” for the company’s games division, it would focus on four franchises going forward: Harry Potter/Hogwarts Legacy, Game of Thrones, Mortal Kombat, and DC (“primarily Batman when it comes to single-character-led games but may include select other opportunities as the new DCU gets built”). Thus far, it has stuck to that strategy.
There’s also a reason to believe that Hogwarts Legacy 2 is coming soon. In 2024, David Haddad, then-president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, told Variety that the games team was “coordinating some of the big-picture storytelling elements in the Hogwarts Legacy sequel with the storylines that will play out in the Harry Potter HBO series” coming later this year.
We’re coming up on the four-year anniversary of Hogwarts Legacy, so the time seems right for more Wizarding World adventures. With major game events coming up, including Gamescom Opening Night Live in August and The Game Awards in December, don’t be surprised if a first look at Hogwarts Legacy 2 magically appears with a 2027 (or 2028) release.
