Workshops (Edmonton): Rent: Making Music. Together. – Citadel Theatre, Theater News

Rent: Making Music. Together.
Workshop led by Tim Weil.
Thursday, Sep 17, 2026
7:00p.m.

This three-hour workshop is a deep dive into a first day of music rehearsal of Rent with the musical director of this incredible musical, Tim Weil, who has been involved since its earliest days in 1994, and who remains with it to this day.

Over the course of the workshop, Tim will share stories and experiences he had on the show with its wonderful casts (in particular the original Broadway company), the director, Michael Greif, and of course the show’s late composer, lyricist, and librettist, the amazing Jonathan Larson. Then he’ll lead the participants through a group warmup, so the ensemble can all begin singing together, with a focus on breathing, using both brain and memory, exercises to help with consonants, some four-part harmony, and a little Stevie Wonder to boot! After that participants will learn “Seasons of Love” together. In other words, doing the exact same thing that all of the Rent casts have done on the first day of music rehearsal!

The evening will end with a Q&A, where Tim will share some behind-the-scenes Rent stories, but more importantly open the floor to hear about your experiences with the show. Whether you’ve seen it live, seen the film, or have been in a production, he wants to know how you have been affected by this ground-breaking musical. And if time allows, he’d be more than happy to coach a few people on their best Rent audition song. Whether it’s a pop, rock, R & B, or gospel song, he’ll help open your eyes and ears so you can become a better singer in those styles.

Wear comfortable clothing and shoes, bring a water bottle and a notebook, your best Rent audition song (and sheet music) in your back pocket just in case, and most importantly, come prepared to connect and sing with your fellow participants and Tim!

Tim Weil is a musical director, composer, arranger, and orchestrator who has worked on more than one hundred productions in New York City and around the world. He was the original musical director for Jonathan Larson’s Pulitzer prize-winning Rent. Other Broadway credits include Shrek the Musical, Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill, and Sally Marr…and her Escorts, starring the late Joan Rivers. His film work includes Rent, Camp, and The Marc Pease Experience, and he has written songs for the children’s television shows, Sheep in the Big City and Bear in the Big Blue House. He is the author of the new book, Making Rent-The Story Behind the Music that Changed Broadway.
