Fifteen actors who legitimately left the film industry… and came back • Journal • A Magazine • , Life in canada

15 September 20262 Mins Read

It’s been four years since America’s sweetheart last graced the silver screen. Like many stars before her, Sandra Bullock declared she was taking a break from her demanding career in 2022, citing the round-the-clock pressures of press tours, shooting schedules and her celebrity status, as well as the need to focus on her family. Bullock never implied she’d be gone for good, but there’s no way of knowing for sure if an actor on a self-imposed hiatus will ultimately return. And so it’s cause for celebration that, with this month’s Practical Magic 2, Bullock makes her long-awaited comeback.

There’s a wealth of precedent for film actors leaving the biz behind mid-career, only to later make some kind of return—be that triumphant, disappointing or surprising for another reason. Consider Joe Pesci, who’s been known to take as many as eight years off between projects, or Gwyneth Paltrow, an Oscar winner for whom acting has taken a backseat in recent years as she has focused on other commitments, including a lifestyle company. Other examples abound, from Eddie Murphy and Winona Ryder to Macaulay Culkin, Lindsay Lohan and Liv Ullmann.

The fifteen actors on this list have been singled out because they have the most compelling departures, revivals or interim histories amidst those gaps in their acting resumes. In addition, this list focuses on actors who left the silver screen (not including work made for television) for at least four years before their eventual return. Those who left and stayed gone (think: Greta Garbo, Gene Hackman and Grace Kelly) didn’t qualify, nor did those currently on hiatus with no clear return dates (think: Maggie Cheung, Emma Watson and Drew Barrymore). Without further ado, here are fifteen actors who legitimately left the film industry—but not, it turned out, in a permanent way.
