Betsy Ross’ 286-Year-Old Home Just Appeared on Redfin—and Its Listing Has Some Surprising Details

30 October 20264 Mins Read

A 286-year-old Philadelphia home associated with one of the most recognizable names in American history has just appeared on Redfin, and its real estate listing contains some details you might not expect.

The Betsy Ross House, located at 239 Arch Street in Philadelphia, is one of the first two properties featured in Redfin’s new Iconic Homes of America initiative, which celebrates the country’s 250th anniversary by giving historic homes the real estate listing treatment.

And while the house isn’t actually for sale, history lovers can explore its rooms without leaving their couches.

According to its Redfin listing, the brick home was built in 1740 and features three bedrooms, zero bathrooms and 2,500 square feet of living space. The entire property, including its courtyard, gift shop and offices, spans 3,643 square feet.

The listing also notes that the property was renovated in 1937 and includes an upholstery shop measuring 210 square feet.

But there’s much more to this historic home than its unusual real estate details.

The Betsy Ross House Has a Remarkable History

The house is closely associated with Betsy Ross, the Philadelphia upholsterer traditionally credited with sewing the first American flag. Although historians debate aspects of that famous story, Ross was a skilled craftswoman whose work became an enduring part of American history.

The property also has an interesting preservation story. According to Redfin, the house sold for $25,000 when it became a museum in 1898, an amount the company estimates would exceed $1 million today.

The home was saved from demolition through a fundraising effort that allowed supporters to contribute through 10-cent memberships.

Today, visitors can explore rooms furnished to reflect the period, including bedding, curtains and slipcovers created by historical interpreters who portray Ross.

Madeline Burk, one of Historic Philadelphia’s Betsy Ross History Makers, portrays the famous flagmaker and helps bring 18th-century history to life.

The historical interpreters who bring Ross’ story to life also have some fascinating insights into the woman behind the American flag legend. In an interview with Redfin, Madeline Burk, one of Historic Philadelphia’s Betsy Ross History Makers, revealed that Ross was married three times, buried three times and never owned her own property.

“She was always a renter,” Burk said.

Burk also shared that she had to demonstrate her sewing skills during her audition to portray Ross, admitting that the experience was intimidating. “I had to sew a straight running stitch on a piece of linen. I did not do very well, I confess,” she said.

Today, Burk and her fellow interpreters sew everything from flags to historically inspired bedding and curtains, helping visitors understand the craftsmanship that was part of Ross’ everyday life.

There’s also a gated courtyard on the property featuring a fountain designed by Philadelphia sculptor Henry Mitchell and built in 1974.

You Can Tour the Betsy Ross House for Free on November 7

As part of the new initiative, Redfin has launched a 3D virtual tour of the Betsy Ross House, allowing visitors to explore its interior online.

But anyone who wants to see the historic property in person will have a special opportunity next month.

On Saturday, Nov. 7, 2026, Redfin is hosting a free public event at the Betsy Ross House from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m ET. The event includes admission to a self-guided tour, local Philadelphia treats, exclusive merchandise available only that day and a complimentary photography experience.

Visitors can register through the home’s Redfin listing.

The Betsy Ross House at 239 Arch Street in Philadelphia will host a free public event on November 7, 2026, featuring self-guided tours and special activities.

The Betsy Ross House/Redfin

The Betsy Ross House is just the beginning of Redfin’s Iconic Homes of America initiative. The company also plans to feature Bishop’s Palace, a 52-room historic mansion in Galveston, Texas, with additional properties joining the collection through 2027.

Readers can sign up for updates about upcoming historic homes and nominate other noteworthy American properties for consideration.
