Hand the world’s richest engineer a hotel brief and he will not reach for a brand standards manual. He will reach for a future he has already decided on — and delete everything that does not serve it. This Viewpoint imagines the result, room by room, built on Ezra Klein’s conversation with historian Quinn Slobodian and on what Musk has built, said and proposed in public.
Base Reality is three stainless-steel cylinders on the Texas coast at Starbase: staffed by robots, powered by its own batteries, and run as one closed technology stack. The name borrows Musk’s favourite thought experiment — that we may all be living in a simulation, and that he, of all people, finds his own life a little too improbable to be the real thing.
The prompt is The Ezra Klein Show episode Elon Musk’s Endgame, in which Klein interviews Boston University historian Quinn Slobodian, co-author with Ben Tarnoff of Muskism. Their argument is that Musk builds dependency on three fronts: money (his weight in the stock market), machines (launch, satellites, cars, robots) and messaging (X and its AI). A hotel is a useful lens, because it puts all three in one building you can walk through.
The ground rules are simple. Every feature is traced to something Musk has built, said or proposed in public, or to the episode’s reading of him. Where we are interpreting rather than reporting, we say so.
