A colourful kite festival is taking over the skies near Calgary this May

1 May 20263 Mins Read

Granary Road is introducing a new way to experience spring this year, with its first-ever Kite Festival. Think open fields, steady wind, and a sky that doesn’t stay empty for long.

According to the organizers, the event will transform the space into an interactive outdoor experience filled with colour, movement, and hands-on activities perfect for the whole family.

A full day of kite-flying experiences

The Kite Festival will take place at Granary Road, located just outside Calgary. What makes the event exciting is that it’s the festival’s annual edition, giving visitors the chance to be part of a brand-new spring tradition.

Throughout the day, you can expect kite building, flying lessons, and live demonstrations, along with an open flying area where visitors try out kite-flying for themselves. The whole event is designed to be a hands-on experience where the sky becomes part of the activity, not just something to look at!

The story behind the festival

At the heart of the festival is The Kite Guys, an Alberta-based group with decades of experience dedicated to the art of kite flying.

Originally founded in 1989 by brothers Bud and Scott Taylor, the group has spent years sharing their passion through workshops and events throughout the province. According to The Kite Guys, their mission has always remained the same: bringing people together through wind, creativity, and flight.

Plan your visit

The festival will take place on May 16 and May 17, 2026, turning a regular weekend into something a lot more interesting than staying inside.

Tickets are priced at $34.95 for general admission or $49.95 if you want a kite included so that you can join in on all the action.

Since the event is held outdoors, it’s recommended to check the weather in advance and dress accordingly so you’re prepared to spend a full day outdoors.

The festival is a great reason to get outside this spring and watch the sky turn into something way more interesting than usual.

Whether you’re there for the kites, the vibes, or just something different to do, it’s the kind of event that makes it easy to get outside for a bit and enjoy the spring weather.

When: Saturday, May 16 to Sunday, May 17, 2026
Time: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Where: 226066 112 St. SW, Foothills County, Alta.
Cost: $34.95 general admission; $45.95 admission (with kite included)
