A mother called out Shaq for selling $100 sneakers in the 90s; he gave up his $40 million Reebok deal signed with Walmart and sold 400 million pairs worth $19-$29

In 1996, Shaquille O’Neal had a problem he probably hadn’t anticipated. Despite being one of basketball’s biggest stars, his sneakers were too expensive for some of the children who looked up to him.

After an Orlando Magic practice, a mother confronted him about the price of his signature shoes. She questioned why he was selling sneakers for more than $100 when many families couldn’t afford them. According to O’Neal, he offered her money, but she refused. What she wanted was more affordable footwear for her children.

The encounter stayed with him, and it eventually influenced how he approached the sneaker business.

Rather than focus exclusively on premium-priced basketball shoes, O’Neal saw an opportunity to serve a much larger market: families looking for affordable footwear. He began developing lower-priced sneakers through a licensing arrangement with ACI International and Warner Bros. Sports. By 1997, his affordable footwear line was already reaching mass-market retailers, with shoes selling for under $30.

His relationship with Reebok, meanwhile, came to an end in 1998.

Years later, O’Neal recounted walking away from a reported $40 million Reebok deal and expanding his affordable sneaker business through Walmart. His Walmart shoes were priced between $19 and $29, making them accessible to customers who might otherwise have been priced out of the signature sneaker market.

The strategy proved remarkably successful. During a 2021 appearance on the Full Send Podcast, O’Neal said his footwear business had sold more than 400 million pairs.

The figure has not been independently audited, but it illustrates the scale of the business he describes.

For O’Neal, the lesson was not simply about selling cheaper shoes. It was about understanding what customers could afford and building a product around that reality.

In a market often driven by exclusivity and premium pricing, Shaq found an enormous opportunity in making sneakers accessible.
