A new one-of-a-kind cruise will set sail from Vancouver to Bowen Island this summer

5 May 20263 Mins Read

If being on the water is your favourite summer pastime, get ready to experience a popular day trip destination in a whole new way. The Vancouver Maritime Museum just launched a new, one-of-a-kind heritage cruise that will set sail to Bowen Island for a limited time this summer.

A scenic journey on a historic vessel

Exploring the rich history and natural beauty of the Salish Sea, the scenic 90-minute journey will be aboard a historic wooden vessel called The Gikumi, which was designed by internationally renowned naval architect Robert Allan Sr.

According to the vessel’s website, The Gikumi was built in North Vancouver, and translates to “Chief” in the Kwak’wala dialect of the ‘Namgis First Nation (Alert Bay).

The journey starts at Heritage Harbour at the Vancouver Maritime Museum, where passengers will be whisked away across the Salish Sea to Snug Cove on Bowen Island. Once they arrive, passengers have three hours to explore the island at their leisure before the return sailing.

In that time, you can wander the charming waterfront village, peruse the local cafes and shops, hit the beach, or follow a peaceful forested trail.

As you travel through English Bay and Howe Sound, live interpreters will share the maritime history of Vancouver, the working waterfront, and Bowen Island.

The 25-person cruise departs from Heritage Harbour on three select days this summer: Thursday, July 9, July 23, and Saturday, Aug. 15, 2026.

Limited tickets are available online for all three days for $220 per person, so you’d better act quickly if you’re thinking of booking.

The small-group experience runs from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., offering those who have never set foot on Bowen Island (and those who love to return again and again) the chance to relax and immerse themselves in the region’s fascinating maritime heritage.

Know before you book

There are a few things to note before you book your spot. For one, there is no wheelchair access onboard, as The Gikumi is a historic wooden ship. As such, passengers will need to feel comfortable climbing stairs and manoeuvring around the vessel.

The good news is, you’re welcome to bring your own food on board!

It’s the ultimate way to spend a day on the water this summer.

When: Thursday, July 9, July 23, Saturday, Aug. 15, 2026
Time: 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Where: Vancouver Maritime Museum Heritage Harbour – 1905 Ogden Ave.
Cost: $220
