Conan O’Brien revealed that fellow comedian Larry David is more like the fictionalized version of himself on Curb Your Enthusiasm than fans of the HBO comedy may realize.
In the September 28 episode of his podcast, Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend, O’Brien shared that he saw David and his wife, Ashley Underwood, at a restaurant. He said he decided to “walk up to the table to say, ‘Hi,'” to the couple before he realized David was in the middle of an argument with the waiter over his meal.
“The waiter brought him a turkey sandwich with no mustard. And he’s like, ‘In the history of sandwiches, when has mustard not been part of the equation?'” recalled O’Brien with a laugh.
O’Brien then noted that the situation felt like something the fictional David, known for getting into arguments and making social faux pas, would do on Curb Your Enthusiasm.
“I said to him, ‘Larry, there’s no cameras,'” said O’Brien on his podcast.

During an appearance on a 2024 episode of Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend, David shared that he appreciates when he is compared to his Curb Your Enthusiasm counterpart.
“I take that as a tremendous compliment. Yes. Because I got to tell you something. I love that guy. That guy. Oh my god. I am so in love with that guy. He’s my hero,” said David to O’Brien while recording the podcast episode.
David clarified that not everyone appreciates when he acts like his Curb Your Enthusiasm character. He then explained that he “got invited to a dinner party” and offended the host because he inquired who else was attending the event.
“I wound up not going. So there you go. I tried to be Larry, and it didn’t work,” said David, who starred on Curb Your Enthusiasm throughout its 12-season run.
David then doubled down on his belief that dinner party guest lists should be made available before RSVPing to the event.
“But by the way, as long as we’re on the subject, is it such a terrible question to ask who’s going to? Why is it such a secret? Why is that a secret? I don’t understand the big secret,” said David, causing O’Brien to laugh.
